Speaker recommendations please

Any of the JBL series of the 70's and 80's would suffice as definitive "vintage" speakers - as others have pointed out - L112's, 110's, 150's are certainly standouts. If you're after a more laid back sound that is equally vintage - I'd go with AR-9's. Good luck!

I would agree. In my limited experience, I found a certain synergy using JBL speakers with a Marantz receiver that I haven't found in any other speaker (although maybe not the perfect speakers, they were very pleasing on what I listened to). My tastes in genre were similar to yours at the time.

My genre priority these days has changed some, but when I really want to crank up some good classic hard rock, I miss that JBL/Marantz sound. I think there was a certain amount of coloration that I liked which I don't have whith my present gear. (don't ask me to define it though, it was just good, no really good).
 
I've got a pair of Technics SB-LX7 speakers that I'm using now, no idea how old they are but Jethro Tull sounds awesome on these (Denon DRA-685 receiver, Realistic LAB-340 tt yes I know the Realistic leaves a lot to be desired)
 
I have an old beat up set of Marantz Imperial 7's that sound great with my Marantz 2215b in my shop! Think I have $25.00 in the speakers and the 2215b. :D
 
if you like the tweeter in your Boston 950's try some klipsch fortes....or JBL L80t's...JBL L100t's.....ads L880...810...910...
 
What about the JBL L-166 Horizons? How do they compare to the L-100's? I have a shot at a pair of these locally

I have a Marantz 2275 paired with ADS L710's that sounds mighty fine. If you want lots of bass, check out the ADS L810's or L880's too. actually, you can't go wrong with any ADS, just research on this forum before buying. There are lots of threads on them.
