Speaker Recommendations with Sherwood S-5500

Hey everyone,

I just acquired a rebuilt S-5500 (early 50w model) and I'm curious what speakers you guys think would go well with this. I have a set of AR-4x that need a refresh – if the consensus is that those are a good match, I'll spend the time to rebuild them.

AR-4 are nice, but if you want to get loud you need something more efficient. Frazier, Altec Lansing, Klipsch, University Sound, JBL, Jensen and the like all made efficient speakers that would go well with an S5500.

Your real wattage is closer to 20 watts per channel RMS than 50. Watts were rated rather um, optimistically in the early 60's

Nothing has sounded better with my Sherwood tube amp than my Altec 604s. That said, if there is any hum or noise in your amp, the Altecs will let you know.

I would want speakers with greater than 96 db at 1 watt 1 meter for your Sherwood. Altec, JBL, EV, Bozaks are pretty close, Klipsch, Frazier, Tannoy, Emilar, Urei, and other efficient speakers.
