Speaker recs for a BIG room

My neighbor has a large shop that is presently running what I think are some white van speakers with 15" woofers (large, tall 3 or 4 ways as I recall). The building is probably 60 x 40 with a high metal roof (15 feet or so) that has pinhole perfs in it. Overall, it doesn't sound bad as the large area sucks up bass and the perferations keep reflections down. The bass he does get is a bit muddy - not tight and crisp. The speakers play loud though and are hooked up to a Marantz 2325 that I recently recapped for him. The amp puts out 125 wpc.

I'm trying to talk him into some new speakers to go along with the refreshed Marantz. The ones he has right now are mounted about 10 feet high on an outside wall. I'm thinking something like a Polk Monitor 10 would fit the bill. Any other suggestions on a single pair of speakers? Another option might be to run 2 pairs but I'd like thoughts on just one pair for now.

Cerwin Vega D-9 or similar CV Pro model that is very efficient so the 125w will go much further.
 
If this is in a shop, I would guess the guy isn't going to spend much money on some speakers. I would go with some Cerwin Vega D-9's that run about 100-200 bucks. I would hit them with more than 125w though.
 
The stereo is in a millwork shop - custom cabinets & such. He's got $$, just doesn't like to throw it away. It is after all, a shop, but we spend quite a bit of downtime sipping scotch, smoking cigars, listening to tunes and telling lies (stories) so decent music is much appreciated. I haven't looked at what he's using now as I'd have to get 10 feet up in the air to nkow for certain, but they look like some sort of Infinity copy - about a good 4 feet tall with 15" woofers. Some big Klipsch or Altecs would certainly play plenty loud, but I'm not sure if a horn is what we're after. Just looking for other opinions.
 
If I had that kind of space, I'd probably try to get a couple pairs of used Klipsch in the KG4.x range and would go from there. If you are actually attempting to fill that area with sound. For just a personal system... a single pair of the Klipsch.

I'm not much of a Klipsch fan, but for filling a space with decent sound without much power, I think you can do a lot worse.
 
Sounds like my shop. Although its a machine shop, not wood, and we drink beer, not scotch. 60x50 - 3,000 sq/ft. The D9's hit with 725wpc/8ohm from a QSC GS7 amp are more than ample.

My shop is 40x60x16 and I have a pair of old Pioneer three way towers with Cerwin Vega 12" woofers powered by an Onkyo receiver that's about 85wpc and an Onkyo 7-band EQ to help boost and cut as needed. My shop equipment is loud and the system cuts through just fine. When the equipment isn't going and you can hear them without background noise they sound good enough considering what and where they are. I think Pok Monitor 10's (I own a set) would lose much of their "fun" in a space that big. As suggested before, I'd be looking at Cerwin Vega D-series which will get plenty loud and sound not too shabby with the Marantz.

Get some DCM KX speakers, series 1 or 2. Not only are they very efficient, they also pump out bass in a serious manner. I have a pair of KX10 Series 2, which have a 10" woofer, 6.5" mid, and a bullet tweeter, in what DCM call a modified transmission line cabinet. The KX12 model has a 12" woofer, and I believe the early KX12s might have had twin 12" woofers.

The other route would be to build your own. Since you have a big shop, you have room for big cabinets. Build a pair of towers to hold two 10 or 12 inch car subwoofers, nothing fancy, whatever cheap brand you can find (Dual, Jensen, even the Pioneers they sell in Wal-Mart). Section off an area inside the cabinet, and mount a couple of midranges and tweeters from Parts Express.

If you can't fill a shop with either of these two options, you need some Marshall stacks!

Never going to be hi-fi so get some used PA speakers with a 15" and a horn and call it good.
 
A few come to mind.
the VOTT has already been mentioned and the Klipschorn, both spendy though.

DCM KX12 may do a good job.
Klipsch KG5.5 would do a good job.
RTR 280DR also fill a large space pretty well.

FWIW Dahlquist DQ-10 seem to love a big open room. Bass would be an issue so a a good sub woofer along with those would fit the bill.
 
Cerwin Vega VS-150's. You want volume -- especially bass volume, in a shop like that. 15" woofers combined with an extremely efficient speaker yields some amazing bass. Mount them on a 12" stand for best results. Be warned though, my mini fridge is smaller than one of these speakers :D

Build your own speakers. That way they can be made to sound the way you want for the space they will be used in.

Use a couple car audio subs 12" will do. If you can find a pair of the older Sony Xplod subs with the red cone they would work just dandy. All you would need is something like an Eminence Delta Pro 12A midbass driver and if you wanted a horn an Altec 811B would work. Would recommend at least a BI amped setup if using car subwoofers, but a tri amp setup would offer more room for adjustment of the individual speakers to the listening space along with a 31 band eq. If the Marantz has pre out main in jacks that would make it very easy to bi amp as all you would need is a two way active crossover and use the McIntosh for the subs.

Another way is to install a plate amp in each sub which has speaker level inputs and outputs. You would then use only one speaker input and output on each plate amp.
