Speaker relay for spec 2

I have a Spec 2 that is supposed to arrive in the next few days. In the meantime, I have started putting together a BOM to restore it. Mattsd threat at https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/pioneer-spec-2-recap-and-restoration-thread.797294/ has given me most of the information I needed. It however doesn't mention any replacement option for the chassis mounted speaker relay (ASR-016). The only other mention of this relay I could fine was EchoWars mentioning he couldn't find a drop in replacement at https://www.audiokarma.org/forums/i...ter-cap-purchase-source.751371/#post-10261078.

I have had really bad experience with the speaker relay in a SX 850, so I tend to replace them in the units I restore. Have anybody found a way to fit a modern speaker relay in a spec 2 chassis? If not, is there any reason to believe that the speaker relays Pioneer used in the spec 2 would be more reliable than in the lower end SX-850?

An LY2F-24DC might be the ticket.
You would have to check the original relay for the contact arrangement and manage the correct connections.
The original clear plastic case might fit the new relay and chassis. If not, the new relay has mounting ears.
The scat shows a flyback diode and I never took the time to investigate that or where it's mounted. In the relay or on a board somewhere?
Get this sorted so I have a reference for the Spec II I'm restoring this winter :biggrin:

Yeah, I did look at the LY2F and it does look promising, with the 2 caveats:
- Is it the same width as the original?
- LY2F-24DC is rated for 10A per contact. Is this enough?

I guess I'll need to wait to get the device to take measurements and see if any rating is printed on the cover.

Looking at the setup, it looks like having the mounts at the top of the case should make mounting easier if anything, either by removing the standoffs or using shorter ones...
 
It's rated to 250 watts.
Voltage at limited peak is near 30v's.
250 watts (8Ω) / 30 volts = 8.3 amps
Getting close.
 
Would using a LY4 4 pole version and bridge 2 contacts together help at all, or is this crazy talk?
 
As mentioned earlier, I don't have the unit yet to check sizes. Thanks for confirming a LY4 won't fit...

So back to the initial question: Will a 10 amp relay work? Looking at the instruction, the current limiter is set at 30v for a 4 ohm load. This would give:

Max power at 4 ohm = 30 ^ 2 / 4 = 225W
Max current = sqrt(225/4) = 7.5A

Does anybody have any data on the specs of the original relay?
 
Not sure how fair a comparison it is, but it looks like the speaker protection relay replacement folks typically use on the SX 1980 is a 653-MY2-02-DC48, with a 5A contact rating...
 
for 4 to 8 ohms of speaker impedance I would NOT sweat it.

UNDER 4 ohms, the power is conveyed more by the current than the voltage.

Power is current squared multiplied by ohms.
 
I finally received the unit today. The spec 2 speaker relay is massive! About twice the size LY2F-24DC.
 
The relay is mostly hidden by the power supply board, so I won’t get good pictures and exact measurements until I get that one out of the way, along with the filter caps, but here is what I could get for now:

Dimensions of the core (rectangular part) of the relay are roughly w x l x h: 35mm x 35 mm x 45 mm. The 2 screws/standoffs are 48 mm appart.

More exact dimensions for the square “core” are 36x32x45mm.
 
What is the name on the coil? Something "Electric"?

It's "Daiichi Electric".

I guess I'll do like everybody else and keep the original for now. Hopefully the bigger relay also means bigger, more reliable contacts, but who knows....

If this ends up failing, plan B is likely to be to try fit the MJN2CE-DC24 EW suggested, with a 3D printed adapter bracket. It may be a tight fit.
 
I want to bring back this thread as I feel like there has to be something that'll work with a bracket that someone has found.
I just used a huge Potts and Blumfield relay in a Hafler DH-500 that also got me thinking.
 
I’m still interested in any solution anybody can offer. Even more for my spec 1 actually, that uses identical relays in the speaker selection logic and are in worse shape.

What about the K10P-11DT5-24?
It's 15A, quick-on connectors, and at least in the Spec 2's case, mounting it to the chassis won't be perfect but it'll look fine and be secure.
