Speaker Score KLH and Advent.

Today I bought two pairs of speakers. One pr is KLH the Other Advent.

The KLH is the model Twenty-Four $12.00 pair. Cones intact sound good. Wood case.

I don't know what the Advents are. No model ID to be found. $16.00 pair. Large cones needs refoam at the least. Veneer case. Lg cones are 8.5" including the now deteriorated surrounds.

I'm not too familiar with these. Did I do OK? Are they worth refurbishing with new surrounds and caps?


Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

You did great!! The KLH model is a sort of venerable speaker, nicely voiced and all around nice speaker for its time. The Advent you have was originally just called "The Advent Loudspeaker" as implied on the back label. Later as they created more speakers in the line, this model was known as "The Large Advent Loudspeaker".

The woofer is a sort of unusual design as they used a smaller cone in a larger frame (10 inch in a 12 inch IIRC). Early models had a concave surround bonded to a masonite outer frame bonded to the stamped metal frame. Later versions had the surround bonded directly to the metal frame. The "fried egg" shaped tweeter came in a couple of versions delineated by color, green and orange IIRC).

A very nice speaker when surrounds correctly redone, nice balanced sound and the cabinets were always nicely executed.

At the price you paid for both pairs, you should have been followed home by flashing lights :thmbsp:

I loved my 24's. I blew the voice coils in mine and had to put spare KLH woofers in from BasicBlues. They were never the same again. I ended up trading them for KLH 38's which I eventually gave to OrionKC. I miss those 24's though. IMO they sound like AR-4x's with tighter, punchier bass.
