SpeakerLab 7 Goodness

Friend of mine was parting with some speakers to make room for more. Decided to let his SpeakerLab 7's go. Proved to be anything but light bringing them down the basement steps by myself. I have a small 30 watt Sansui 1000x driving them right now....wow! Not bad at all, very good actually. Veneer work, recap, grill frames, grill cloth are all required. The foams are rubber so no worries there. Should be fun.

Pretty rough shape in some areas and lots of veneer work coming up. Any tips on getting that bottom woofer out for the re-cap? Speakers are all working which is a bonus !

The design that put them on the map! I had a set at one time and loved them- after years they became hard to listen to- especially after CD came into play, those horns would hit really hard! That 8HD EV lens & driver had to be set in the room just right, the T35 EV tweeter rolled off just outside 12khz, the Nestrovic low end was its redeeming grace. Like the Radio Shack Mach Speakers, they were the better "poor mans Altecs"

The drivers are commonly only held in place with a bead of silicone. They (usually) come out easily enough. I use a putty knife to CAREFULLY pry my way around the frame, and as I go I CAREFULLY cut the silicone with an x-acto knife. Don't try to pry the thing out from one position or you'll bend the basket.

The WA these sounded rather close in my memory . Wa had a bit more bass to me. This said sorry but they're is no way I would ever put Speakerlab in the same basket as radio shack! Sorry

My restored models 2's sound great for a simple 2 way acoustic suspension and when hooked up to a proper amp with some power. Just replace the caps and binding posts. Seal up the drivers better etc. Those cabinets should be very nice when cleaned up.

Yes, those binding posts are junk. I'm thinking ERSE caps for the crossovers.

I think you have to buy Erse caps in qty of maybe 25 or so!! Very nice caps none the less!!

sorry but the 7s were not nesterovic. it's a common mistake people make about them because of the different sized woofers in the same cabinet space.

i have built my own speakers with a 10" and 12" together and it does fine if both have low Fs. Pat Snyder knew what he was doing! AS speakers can work very well this way which makes me wonder why other manufacturers didnt do this. the smaller woofer has better midrange performance than the larger. you can roll off the 12" with a choke over 200hz.

I read all Pat Snder's Compendiums and cut my speaker teeth on his published works- a fine designer in his own right for sure! Was the Super 7 not a spin off of the Nestrovic active/passive patent? What design did they use it in?

Now that I recall you are correct in the SS7's not using the Nestrovic set up- but I am almost sure that Speakerlab used it somewhere, right? Thanks for the correction

Speakerlab used Nestorovics bass system in their S30's , S40's and the big daddy S50's . When Nestorovic left Speakerlab he took his patent and Speakerlab had to stop using it...
