Speakerlab`s on ebay

Is it me or did they just not put screws in the mids and tweeters on those? Seems like some are missing and that they are siliconed in place. Was that common? Maybe these were the kit versions.

Tweeters and mids looked a bit suspect to me as well, but I don't know what the originals are supposed to look like. Doesn't really look like EV horns though..

Yeah, I'd say that what's holding the price down is the shipping. But I'm sure those suckers are heavy - I own a pair of Speakerlab 3's, which weight roughly 65 lbs each! Tweets and mids look OK to me, but the lack of screws might present an issue. My 3's sound awesome, I'm sure that these would kick it up a notch :music:

I would say that they look stock to me from the 80`s... the horn is maybe another model... I know all the catalogues on on the speakerlab website. Maybe Speakerlabfan or Sir Byrd or ...could give an opinion?
I paid $100 shipping for mine but they were double boxed and arrived perfect. They are heavy so this is IMHO around the right price for shipping. It all depends on the total cost ( mine coston ebay $150+$100 shipping 250)

I think the originals might would have had a ribbon tweeter in them based on what that extra plate size looks like that filled the gap. Dang...I wish I still had all the original brochures from back in the day.

all the SL catalogues are available( i have printed them all out ).Just go to the speakerlab website and the all catalogues are there by year that you can print out (section history under old catalogue i think )

I listened a while back to the SL 3s and the 4`s in the same room and I recall there is no real audible difference to my years. Now for rock music the 7`s were incredible ( prehaps the best rock speaker ever IMHO) but as I listen to 90% jazz I am happy with the 4`s

BTW I looked at photos of all the past SL`s I have had in my hands since 1977 ( .1, 3, 7, 7WA 30`s and now 4`s ) and I believe none of them had the tweeters or horns or...screwed in . Maybe they were meant to be glued in?
and thanks to Fisherdude for moving

Speakerlab never screwed there speakers in place! They used silicone. And as for the Popsicle sticks that is factory. the reason? the magnet is huge on the tweeters and they cut an over size hole just to get that magnet in there, Then they cover up the upper and lower part of the hole with the sticks to seal the box.they even had all the do-it-yourselfers do the same thing. All the drivers in those speakers are stock!

Are they worth $750 + shipping? Not to me, But the tweeters sell for between $500-750 so to someone they are worth it. I have a pair of the 7s but they do not have the T350 tweeter just the t35 but like it has been said, You will not find a better Rock speaker

That's how they look.

Useful information
This discussion had me take another look at my 3's. Sure enough, the tweeters and mids are not screwed in, only siliconed in.

Saunadog, just curious did you ever recap the crossovers on your 3`s?
I was going to rip apart my 4`s but as they really sound great to me I am leaving them alone for the moment .....

No, I haven't. Currently, I have them tucked away where I work (shhh!) Semi hoarding tendency I know, but I really have no room in my current residence for them. Couldn't pass on the price though ($40, thrift). There is a meeting room at my place of employment with a stereo system setup, which includes Klipsch Forte II speakers. I was dying to try the 3's, so I swapped out speakers.
Now, I'm getting older and my hearing isn't what it used to be, but darn if the 3's didn't compare VERY favorably (to my ears) with the Fortes :music:

Well the sevens sold for 750 and the 4`s did go for 360+115 shipping. Interesting Saunadogs comparing the SL and Klipsch. I do remember comparing these 2 brands when I was much younger in the 80`s and found SL to have better bass. Now if you go on the Klispsh chat room, they love to bash SL....saying they are cheap knockoffs.....IMHO 470 may seem pricy but SL`s are a great bang for buck and sadly their heydays are over....
