Speakers are piling up

I came across a lot of speakers in the last month or two.
All at the local thrifts or yard sales.
All between 5-40$
I keep telling myself no more speakers, Its is hard to leave them when there this cheap.

Soundcraftsmen 2640TX - cabinets rough
EPI 100V - need surrounds
B & W 610 - real nice
ADS L-980 - real nice
Acoustic Research AR-38s -need surrounds
Fulton Musical Industries FMI-80 - cabinets rough

I also picked up a large amount of veneer at the thrift store. I might have a go at re-skinning the FMI-80 speakers, they might be a good candidate for my first time, being rather small.

It's either the landfill or us. With us, at least, they may have a second chance. Or third, or forth...

Veneering isn't too difficult, sharp blade, and good surface to stick to.
clean substrate edges make it easier,
the results are very rewarding!

Go for it!

We need to stay out of thrift stores, away from yard sales and avoid the temptation to look at CL. Yes, too many people don't know what they're getting rid of but I have too many now and too many projects. I keep telling myself I'll finish them when it gets cooler and then I'll sell some of them. Then there is that wife thing."I thought you were going to sell those speakers and instead you keep bringing in more." My excuse is that there not quite finished yet!

I just plain don't have room for a big collection of speakers. I have a few big speakers I'd love to own, but I don't have the space to accommodate more than one pair of large-sized speakers in my main hi-fi setup (and my W90's aren't going anywhere... I'd end up kicking myself SO-hard if I ever made that mistake, so if you ever see me contemplating the idea, give me a virtual slap upside the head and scold me for considering anything so-stupid... We all get that way once in a while and have to be nudged back onto the right path).

I'm awfully-tempted to explore the vintage Fishers, specifically the big ones from the XP-10 on up. The sound is supposed to be glorious, but the cabs on those things are even-bigger than my W90's. And I've always wanted a pair of big Bozaks, but again, not enough room for more than one huge-ass pair of speakers in my setup.

At some point enough is enough :D Just where that point is is an individual decision...

After you play with all of them, then what? I suggest moving some along to the newbies that drop in here looking for starter advice. Better to get them going with a decent refoamed pair from Barter Town than out there in the wild :)

I think there are a few recent newbie threads on the board as I type this.

The only problem I see with this is that speakers are pretty heavy to ship, even small ones if they are of decent quality. I have resold a few locally and shipped some drivers to others.

If the cabinets are in really rough shape, I don't mind parting out the drivers.
It is the really clean ones that become an issue.

We need to find a way to market those old, restored great-sounding speakers from yesteryear. This is the age of nostalgia for the post-war baby boomers. Just how hard could that be?

I would rather have one great pair of speakers then multiple vintage pairs myself. Music is a listening event for me.

All that money spent on them could be used to enhance one or two pairs of truly great speakers to something real special for yourself.

I think we are all inflicted with this disease !!!! :D

I Know it very well, it nearly drove me away from the hobby buying and selling, buying and selling till I started some serious DIYing.

The DIYing of extreme networks drove the speaker disease away from me. They are the forgotten thing or the last thing of interest for most people. To bad because they are as important as any other part of a system.

Wimpy networks don't cut it for me anymore.
