Speakers As Speaker Stands Question

What are the benefits or drawbacks (if any) of using speakers as speaker stands? Is there any way to best place speakers if using them as stands? For example is one speaker sitting flush on another best vs. turning "stand" on side? Would something between speaker and "stand" help? If I drink enough cheap wine is it all inconsequential? I have trouble locating original or moderately priced stands for large bookshelf speakers such as Large Advent or ADS L 620. The other night I turned some old KLH Model 6 that I am not using on their side a and employed them as stands. Seems OK. Comments? Suggestions? Advice?

I see no reason not to. I am presently doing this. I have my primary listening speakers for tunes (Tannoy 15" HPD). Then I have a pair of Kef Q300 sitting on top of them that I use primarily for home theatre. The height is just about perfect, but maybe a bit high. I think it's actually pretty useful because it conserves space.

If the speakers used as stands are not themselves hooked up to an amplifier, short the + and - terminals. That will have a self damping effect on the woofers -- less likely to influence bass output from the actively playing speakers.

Can't think of any sonic benefit but you do save some money.

Almost for sure you will want something between the speaker used as a stand and the actual speaker.

Try to get the tweeter of the "speaker" the same height as your ears.

This is an excellent and very important suggestion as if you do not do this the 'stand' speaker will act as a Helmholtz Resonator and can have the effect that Stuart mentioned.

BWAAAAAA HA HA HA HA, now that's rich. I guess you never heard of the Infinity Emit tweeter, which just so happens to reside in another pair of speakers I own. My sig only shows a fraction of the equipment I own, and the list of equipment owned over the years is almost endless.

Here are pics of the Infinitys I mentioned and one other pair of speaks now gifted to my nephew. My experience doesn't just involve Klipsch LOL.

And if Klipsch aren't your cup of tea that's no reason to be condiscending toward the highly regarded brand.

I appreciate the responses. I am not noticing Advents sounding much different but I am always interested in optimization and do not have extra stands. How do I short + and - on the KLH 6 I am using as stands?

Simply tie a jumper wire from positive to negative.

Thanks - I gueesed as much - will do. One of these days I will come across stands for the Advent but for right now the Model 6 on side at least are right height and solid even if not beauty contest winners as stands.
