Speakers from Denmark?

PICS ADDED! Scroll down! :)

Anyhoo, traveled to Milford Iowa today for my wife's Primerica job and popped by a thrift for fun. It has been a loooong time since I've made a frivolous purchase but today I did it anyway. There was a home-made subwoofer sitting on the floor and I checked it out. Really good quality; solid and professional looking. Ported w/a 12-inch woofer in need of foam. The grill cloth totally reminded me of my HK-20's at home. So I'm guessing 70's/early 80's. I look up and here's 4 chunky little satellite speakers dressed in the same cabinetry and cloth; with hanging hooks screwed into the top of them. They are Heavy, 14 pounds on my home scale.

$20 for the set; couldn't resist. Got home and pulled the (nailed) grill cloth off. 5 1/2 ish driver, no markings whatsoever other than "made in denmark". Seem of good quality but what the hell do I know. Also a itty-bitty tweeter only marked 8-ohms. Hooked up 2 to my Luxman r-1050 and thwy sound divine. Like, way better than they should. The crossover networks look hefty (again I know not much).

I will attempt to upload pics as I am curious as heck about these guys. The sub turned out to be fairly cheesy, tiny magnet but marked 1200 watts. Hmph. Fiber-fill stuffed generously in all cabs. Old-school scew-down terminal connects on all including the sub.

Any ideas? Pics or no go? Do you even care? ;)

There was once a brand called Dantax, that was made in Denmark. I audutioned a pair at Hoopers in Biloxi/Gulfport in 2003, and was told they had been around awhile they looked sturdy and well made.

Peerless - a quality brand but less expensive than Dynaudio and Scan Speak. I believe that Peerless drivers have been used in many commercial designs. I believe that some of the ADS dome tweeters were Peerless.

Someone please (like I have to ask, lol) correct me if I am wrong

Argh. Tried using my wifes phone... Get to Upload Pictures and I hit choose file and.....nothing. Damn my non technical ness.

Doubt these will be same, but I had a nice HK Festival 500 executive stack system that came with matching Danish-made speakers, done very nicely. Heavy, good drivers, ported design - sounded decent too.

Success! Thanks to my lovely wife. :thmbsp:

Kind of smacks of older Seas and Scanspeak woofers, like were used in the A-25 speakers only the frames of those were cheezier and had a smaller magnet. Yours seem to have a heavier frame. The cone paper and surround are almost identical.

Definitely Peerless tweeters. I'd say SEAS woofers. Crossover uses a hefty air-wound inductor, and film caps.

Good stuff in there!

Actually, the SEAS woofers that Dynaco used had a cast frame, not a stamping. (I think the Scanspeaks did too.) They also used cylindrical Alnico magnets. The cone and surround on these do look very much like SEAS/Scanspeak woofers though.

Excellent stuff guys!

Man I wish I wasn't working overnight tonight!

I wanna go home and play. :)

The sub driver seems a bit sub par (groan).

May be your subwoofer...

Found this on the Speakerlab website....

http://www.speakerlab.com/catalog_05_1975_Spring.html page 12

Not sure how to post a link hope it works.

Speakerlab at that time was buying its woofers from outside suppliers (later they built their own, mostly) It was very common to just shuffle numbers around so as to not as easily find the same drivers in the open market. An example was the Electrovoice T35 tweeter....Speakerlab labeled it the HT3500.

Here we are looking at the W1200B. Maybe? Really a very good woofer but in performance not in highest quality materials or cutting edge design.

Just my thoughts...

Thanks for that!

I would like to think the sub is of similar quality but it seems a bit light. Guess the only other woofers I can compare them to were the JBL 128h(?) I refoamed out of my L150a's.

They don't look even close to the quality of the SEAS woofers in any dynacos I've ever seen. Although, they might be good quality they dont say scandinavia to me.
