Speakers made that used a single full-range driver?

From the 1990's we have the Goodmans Imagio IC50, IC100, IC110, IC208, IC218 and IC318.

All these speakers used a 6.5" Goodmans ICT driver where the aluminium tweeter was located in the centre of the bass driver voice coil and driven through magnetic induction.

All the above speakers used just this driver, the larger speakers in the ranges had additional bass drivers.

I recently bought a pair of Rola CMx8's in a home made sealed box. From the look of the material on the front, they were put together in the 1970's. Very solid box but ugly as sin.

I plan one day to have a go at making some Voigt pipes in the Jeschke design, and utilise the Rola Plesseys to keep costs down. The speakers I purchased are very nice, maybe they do lack that last hight frequency tingle, but I find them to be very open and quite dynamic, great for acoustic jazz. The DIYer that put these together seems to know what he was doing, bass doesn't lack punch, and they get your feet tapping pretty easily. They do vocals as nicely if not better than my old Magnaplanar SMG's. Maybe my Sansui AU-555A adds somewhat to the darker warmer tones.

I can imagine them getting a bit overwhelmed in a busy pop arrangement, but otherwise I am very happy with them. According to the only spec I can find they go to 12khz.

From what I understand our hearing deteriorates rapidly from the age of 20 onwards, and I guess I may be missing some of that real top sparkle anyway, I am 47.

I am really looking forward to eventually building the Voigts, but if they end up sounding or looking cruddy, I am keeping the ugly box for the Rola's.

I will endeavour to make a few pics and upload them tomorrow. Not sure how, but will try. Don't expect too much, they are just small floorstanders in a polished MDF box with an acoustic curtain of beige.

Imaging from these speakers is impressive, and they seem to be pretty sensitive, that's why I think they will be ok in a voigt pipe. The pair cost me AUD$40.00 from Ebay, and they put to shame some of the stuff I hear in the shops for a lot more money than that.

IF they don't work in the Voigts, then I will replace them with Fostex 8" Full rangers. I love my Maggies, I love my old Elac 3 ways as well, but these DIY'ers have really made me sit up and pay attention.
 
Panasonic Thrusters (don't laugh) are actually a full-range river in a sealed box with a passive radiator tuned for 40Hz. The build quality of the box is abysmal, but the success (regardless) of the design is pretty apparent at least in the number of readers here who have heard them.

I bought a pair of these recently for $12 or so to determine why I liked them 'back in the day', when driven by a Panasonic all-in-one. That driver is a very light weight highly efficient paper cone, and has good speed and imaging, which is how it beat the competitors when these came with units that were all we could afford.

(by my current listening standards, yeah Thrusters overall suck -mainly lacking any clear highs and bass below 40Hz. this bodes poorly really for any 'full range' speaker in the long run, and I have some nice Fostex 5-3/4" that I am considering in the same thought, although not horn loaded or anything. JVC Executive cherry speakers demonstrate the improved speed and reasonable highs of the full-range driver nicely, but you need something else or a major enclosure for adequate bass) -sf

Here we go, I don"t think these are going to end up in the Smithsonian for their design or looks, but they sound nice.

Speaking of full range speakers, I've seen a lot of Realistic "Solo" series speakers lately. The cabinets looked pretty solid and they appeared to be from the 60's, or 70's. One was a pair of Solo 4's and the other was a pair of Solo 1's. I passed on both paris, but I'm still a little curious. Are they worth bothering with?
 
I seem to recall a few Yorx speakers that made use of a single full-range driver........ :scratch2:
 
Altec 755A and 755C - I owned a pair of (reconed) 755Cs once - life wasn't too exciting when you're missing everything above 13khz

I have a single Roger-Charles fullrange speaker in the basement... 12" with a whizzer - never listened to it, never got a cabinet or brother for it

Actually the LC-1a is a coaxial driver.
 
You are of course correct. RCA called it a duo-cone and there are two acoustically separate diaphragms, each with its own voice coil-- a coaxial by any definition.
