Speakers making radar noises Windows 10

Hello all! I have two Harman Kardon HKTS14 speakers connected to a SONY Str-de885 receiver. My laptop goes to the receiver from an HDMI out to RCA audio converter. Upon starting up the system like today it makes some weird-ass noises. It only makes the noises when the sound output is the HK speakers, everything is normal when I set the output to my computer's built-in speakers.

What is happening? It worked perfectly fine yesterday, I doubt I blew the speakers which I was listening to perfectly fine (at an above-average volume) only 13 hours ago.

I use this system for some gaming and light music listening, it’s nothing special.

I'd think it's the converter that failed rather than the laptop. Figure out what you've got sitting around with an hdmi input (tv,monitor..?) and plug the lappy into that to verify hdmi out is working.
 
Acoustical feedback I presume. Sounds as if the microphone of the laptop is open. Switch it off or turn it down. As this is Win10 it is easy to do.
 
HDMI out to an "audio converter". Do you not have a USB port? Maybe HDMI will work (never tried, don't know) but if you're only looking for audio, why not use a USB port to a DAC"? Is your RCA "audio converter" a DAC? What input are you using on the receiver?

Again, never tried HDMI so I could be way wrong.
 
I ended up finding out it was the converter
I bought one of those 3.5mm jack out to rca audio converters and it works perfect now. thanks guys!
