Hi everyone I’m working from my restored speakers back to source. Have a pair of newly re-coned Dahlquist M-907s. I am the original owner. Would be grateful for recommendations on amps and preamps (both vintage and modern). Thks!

Depends on what you prefer, separates or integrated units, tube or solid state. Any preference regarding manufacturers?

I always start with gear from the same era

ADCOM amps & preamps are very easy to find on the used market, inexpensive and great sounding

GFA 535 power amplifier

GFP 555 preamplifier

GPT 500 preamplifier with tuner

I own all of these, love them

What were you using before? Why the change?

Thanks!

I’d get a new or slightly used Luxman amp of 50 watts per channel or more.

But we need to know what you want to accomplish volume max, budget and such, need phono input?

Post your location and some might look at local offerings and let you know that the perfect amp or receiver is listed in your area.

Oh Dobbs Ferry, NY from your Hi Folks thread. Should be lots of good options listed on FBMP, CL, Offer Up and other local sites to check.

Those are really cool speakers! :) My recommendation, would be two fold: (1) I would be something that produces clean power. Perhaps a new Yamaha AS-501 for example, of its larger brother, the AS-701, perhaps an Adcom GFA-815 and a GFA-555, would also be an alternative. (2) Although you have re-coned the speakers, you did not mention the electronics. The crossovers are ancient, and will have degraded. I used to have a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 7s prior to a house fire in 2019. I had just installed new crossovers and tweeters in them. The difference was phenomenal.

Good luck on your project though, and I would be very interested to hear about you ultimately decide! :)

Those are fine speakers. Before you decide on how you plan to amplify them, make notes on what you need the device to do:

1. What source material do you need amplified; Phono, CDs, tape decks, streaming, video.
2. How big is the room and what is your normal listening volume.
3. What conveniences do you want: remote, upgradability, signal pass thru, etc.
4. Will others be using it.
5. How much are you investing.

This will help others here give you recommendations.

I'll second the Adcom GFP815/GFA555 II combination since that was what I was using although bi-amping with two GFA555 II's. I was very happy with the sound although I can't comment on the phono section since I never used it.

You know I will always recommend Adcom!! :beerchug: Besides, the GFP 815 I can recommend from personal experience. It is really an "old-school" pre-amp, and it is absolutely silent. The 555-II... I have never had one of those, just the regular 555, but I have also heard the current production (Taiwan made)GFA-555, and those sound really nice too. Would I give up my 565s? Um, no... but the 555 is a serious, serious amp. There is one more I should have mentioned: The current production Rotel 1572. Those sound incredible as well.

Tasha :)

The Dahlquist M-907s warm, smooth sound signature might work well with Yamaha's As 501's clean, transparent sound. Yamaha's ace in the hole is its variable loudness function.

I also like the Marantz PM 6007 and Rotel's A10 mk2. These have a warm sound signature like your speakers. Sometimes too much of a good thing. But where talking a small amount, would Probably work just fine too.

Your speakers don't appear to present a difficult load, so pretty much any quality amp in about the 40 wpc range + should work well. Look for quality over quantity. A remote control is very handy too, A must for me.
