Spec-1 in the house!

I recently acquired a most stunning Spec-1 from our forum moderator Retro_Stereo and this unit is about as clean of a Spec-1 as I could have hoped to find. Thank you very much Greg! It sure is great to have my Spec-4 back up and running and now this completes the package.

So I have a question about hookups- I am currently just running the speaker outputs from the Spec-4 directly to my speakers. In reading through the Spec-1 manual, it says to connect the speaker outputs from the amp into the preamp and then connect speakers to the output terminals on the preamp. My question is, if I'm only running 1 pair of speakers, is there any advantage to connecting this way? I understand that the headphones will only work if I connect this way, and since I'm not much of a headphone listener I don't care much about that. But does it effect the sound at all, or what is the reason for running speakers through the preamp?

Thanks for the help, I'm just curious how others are set up and if I'm missing something else.

You pretty much covered it. Just run it the way you have it set-up. If you don't use headphones and you only have one set of speakers, just connect the speakers to your Spec 4 and you're good to go.

If you don't need the headphone jack, and only have one set of speakers, then sounds like you have it covered.

Congrat's on the Spec-1, I have my eye on one right now.. Just hope it is still available at the end of the month... It is a bit pricey, but look's brand new. What are these worth anyway? The one I am looking at is $500.00

I've seen them on "The Bay" recently going for just shy of $400 up to around $700. Just depends on how it looks and how the auction is presented.

Enjoy your new addition. The spec 1 is a beautiful piece of gear. I stumbled upon a Spec 1 and 4 for next to nothing. I still have to pinch myself when I look at it.

Sorry Ron, I just caught this thread. Thanks for your purchase. Yeah, as everyone else mentioned, if you're using just one pair of speakers, and don't use the headphones, just hook your speakers directly into the SPEC 4. What is also cool about the SPEC 1 is, if you hook up another amp (because you have two sets of inputs going into the SPEC 1), the SPEC 1 controls them equally and you can hook up another pair of speakers that way as well. I've had two of my EchoWars' rebuilt SPEC 2's going into one rebuilt SPEC 1 and powering two pairs of Infinity RS 2.5 Speakers and WOW!!! Those SPEC 1's are very versatile and that's why I like them so much!

I just was looking at at the extremely beautiful Spec Gear that Retro has up for sale and all I could do was drool and :tears: I've owned lots of Pioneer and still have my original SX-1980 that I bought new in 1979 but I always dreamed if the Spec 1 & 2. Oh well, not that I can't afford them, it's the threat of death that stops me. If I brought any more gear in this house, my wife would kill me literally. Or she'd leave me for sure. Hey, then the bedroom could could be a 2nd man cave.....:scratch2:
