Spendor A6's Finally Arrived

Mike - Almost 2 yrs now and you are still happy with the A6. I have been following this and BigEric's "The Spendor Thread" and Art's A6r. Well the r are over my price range so I am looking at used A6. A pair went on Agon for $1500 a few months ago. That streaches my limit.

I see you changed amps after getting the Spendors. Was that for better sound quality? Was it for power, as I see you got a very powerful amp.

My situation is different. I have my dream integrated amp already, a Sonneteer Orton, which makes all all the speakers that I have tried with them sound better (6 pair tested so far). It is not a high power amp so I need to be careful about speakers.
I notice that the A6 are rated at 86 db sensitivity into 8 ohms. My Castle Severn small floor standing speakers are 87 db and are easy to power. I have been switching the Orton between Quad Classics which are 86 db at 6 ohms, very easy to power and the Rogers LS3/5a are 15 ohms and I turn the volume up pretty high to get them cooking.

The Spendors are far more efficient than 15 ohm LS3/5As.
The Sonneteer won't even break a sweat to power A6s.

The M6i is a great amplifier and I have zero complaints. I agree with Audiodon though, a great amp like the Sonneteer will drive them, no sweat. In fact, I've been thinking about how my Spendors might sound with a Naim XS or Supernait. As long as the amp has a hefty, robust power supply, high current capability you'll find the Spendors a pretty good match.

I bought the M6i at the time because I could and it was one the amps highly spoke about in some of the British forums. There is a broad opinion that the Spendors aren't that fussy.

I love my A6's!:music:

audiodon and Mike- Thanks for the insight. No speakers in Alaska to audition so I must just wing it.

The M6i looks great btw!

so no upgrade bug yet eh Mike??

I just got bitten by the Shunyata Black Mambas, sonic bliss with my gear so far. Best upgrade I've made in a long time.

However, yes there seems to be an amp bug I'm trying to swat down :D

Must resist!:music:

Still have to work to do on some acoustics.

What amp is in consideration? And I knew about the Speaker cables, but just know noticed you have the Shunyata Power Cabling.....which one? I'm sure your rig is sounding absolutely great!

Shunyata Venom HC for the amp and Shunyata Venom Source for DAC and transport. I need one mor Venom HC for my PS Audio Dectet which is on its way from PS Audio after a software upgrade for a known bug.

Byron, the amp.....I just don't know. I've tried tubes in a phono preamp.....didn't like 'em. I tried a well regarded tube line stage preamp paired with a Parasound power amp.....didn't like it.
The M6i is a beast of an amp with absolute control of bass frequencies and I've heard it described as offering a "slightly tubey" mid and high but what I've found is that if whatever comes down from the source, the M6i doesn't mess with it, very neutral.

I've thought about auditioning a Prima Luna Dialog 5 power amp paired with the M6i front end. Conversely, I have been interested in the Naim Supernait 2 which I'd don't think is as neutral as the M6i. What is "the Naim sound" anyway?

I've got some more acoustic tweaking to do which shows a great return so far. Amps seem to be further down the road but the one thing that keeps bugging me is that I've never tried a tube power amp in any system I've owned. Maybe if I can get the local Prima Luna dealer to allow a home audition I can put that behind me, stick with the M6i and buy some more music:D
