SPL-4000 - Canadian Monsters take over the front room...

Lee, I'm glad you finally got to hear them on tubes. When I first saw the specs on them earlier in the thread, it was the first thing that I thought of, I wonder what they would sound like on a small tube amp.
So how are you liking the combo?

They sound really good with this tube amp. It's amazing how loud only a couple of watts can go with the right speakers. I was listening to Daft Punk "Random Access Memories" the other night. This CD is recorded pretty bass heavy, although not "brickwalled" like a lot of newer releases. A couple of the really deep bass notes, you could hear the amp distorting, but even then it wasn't obnoxious.

Lee.

SPL were Paisley Reasearch branded. They were made by API who also made Energy, Mirage, Image and bought over Paisley probably mostly to get Ian Paisley to work on their other lines. They then turned his brand into a line for more rack system oriented stores who wanted a high efficiency speaker. Probably much better engineered than most speakers of that style. Maybe early 90's IIRC.

I currently have a pair of the SPL-1000's (Twin 5 1/4 and 3/4 soft dome tweeter per speaker) on the rebuild schedule. Initial listening was pretty impressive for their size. Decent bass down to 45 Hz, smooth midrange, Tweeters are a little on the quiet side but cymbals were clear and detailed. Almost no information on them on the web. My guess they were often passed over for the larger models.

If you all can find another pair that aren't blown up, rebuild them. Worth the effort so far.
Best $15 I spent at Goodwill. :D

Decent bass down to 45 Hz ??
Decent and 45Hz does not ring me any bells...

Should these towerish speakers be good by any members opinions, they are still the '' uglyess-I-hate-tower-speakers-so-much-with-those-damn-specs-stickers ''

I like good bass down to 30Hz at least... damn, with real wood veneer at least....
Well, that's me.

I have the 3000s and they sound pretty good for the metal I listen to. Thanks for your opinion though

You are confusing Elfasto's small SPL-1000, the smallest MTMs in the brochure, which goes down to 45 Hz -3dB, with the largest SPL-4000, that the OP has, and which go down to 25 Hz.

I think I'd leave the grilles on, but i do like many of the speakers with that heritage.

25Hz is pretty decent at the -3dB point.
If they could be non tower type, that would add much interest.

Looks is not everything, I agree.
I'm old and grumpy.

I remember at a store in early 1990 we got a fairly large shipment of SPL monitors that were factory seconds; nothing major wrong, just a scratch or two. They were all well constructed and played impressively loud. I never had much chance to audition them critically because they filled up the main sales area and were all gone within a week. Not one return.

I just today scrapped 1 of my 2 pairs i bought brand new in the mid 1980's made 1 set with surrounds still intact & kept the spare parts like crossover network & wire harnesses. They were fine in Denver for 3 decades Vegas though even drier.

Think you are not referring to the same speaker he is.....lol

98db rating is pretty nice. No wonder just a few watts can get them loud.
There is a brand similar that was sold in big box stores here. Big ugly graphics, way too much text on the label, multiple mid bass and bass drivers. And ugly black textured cabinets. They were rated at 98db also.
Thay a really sounded good if not a bit bright. I just can't remember the Brand. I saw a set for sale recently for $50.

Whatever floats your boat. Have a good day.
Reproducing ( low ) bass is about (most of all ) woofer diameter... it's about reaching the feeling that you like and, feeling that the rendering is right.
Personnally, any woofer diameter below 8 inches is a no liker for me....

Here I go again with '' looks '' again...

Looking forward having '' in my face '' negative comments...
Open up your comfort zone and try something different. Totem made in Quebec make some fantastic speakers. The Totem Tribe Tower has 4 1/2 inch woofers and goes to 30 hrz and are not shy at all in the bass department. Preconceived notions are for conservatives. Live a little.

I did not know Totem was mage in Quebec. They are common around my location

A person can be surprised when they open up. I would have never thought a 4 1/2 inch woofer could produce such bass. Live and learn I guess. We all are influenced by past experience. I have to constantly be on the guard.

I have the SPL-3000's, look white van, sound really good. Using them for the fronts on my HT system where they do a great job.

These speakers were for the brick and made by the same people same place 135 torbay rd. Complete sleepers with polycell tweeters. They have that same white van style graph on the front. The digital monitor digital ready thing is kind of funny that they would.use as a market ploy.

Yeah, you would definitely think these things were white van.
