SR-929 went quick.

Wow. What a beauty.

That would look nice with that glossy black Pioneer Elite integrated amp! 8-)

That table got good money because of it had all the parts and seemed to be packed correctly. The cartridge looks like an AT 15S* . * determines the stylus shape, Shibata or elliptical, and a sought after cartridge. Nice table. Comparing the specs to the Kenwood KD-650, they are very similar. Both have resin bases, the SR's nicely covered in the black laquered particle board. Sweet table and they buyer did well.

I confess to pulling the trigger on this one! When I saw it I thought it wouldn't stay on there very long and I didn't want to start a bid war on it that would go higher than the BIN. This is the most I've ever paid for a TT but recently I have seen them go for more money without the extras. Plus this one looks very nice cosmetically and I believe the cart is a good one.

One of these has been on my gotta have list for some time. I expect it will work great with the Sansui BA-F1/CA-F1 rack system I am putting together. Now if the guy would just respond to my emails so we can discuss adequate packing. Fingers crossed for a safe shipment!

Sage, you did well! With all the original packing present, I wouldn't worry too much about packing, especially with the original box inside another. The plinth will be suspended in the middle of the box in styrofoam; normally the dust cover is above that with a styrofoam insert containing all the parts. Lets have pics when she's up and running.

Awesome.:thmbsp: If I was still looking for a TT I would have bought it. A great price IMO.

I have almost that in my SR-838 and cartridge, and I don't have the original box.

Not to get into a pissing contest, but I shipped a TT in the original box and packing, with that box centered in another box with 1 1/2" of foam padding between. Arrived pristine.
You packed it pretty much per the instructions on the link I posted to The Turntable Factory.

The more I consider it, the more of a bargain that auction was. I'm guessing that 929 retailed for about $500 in '78, sold for about $400. $400 1978 dollars I'm guessing converts to somewhere between $1200 - $1500 or more today depending on how you figure it, suffice that that interval may be conservative.

That NIB Sansui SR-929, if in my hands, would not be swapped for ANY new table at $3000. Not because it is "better." Whether it is or not could be debated forever. But because it is cooler. Way cooler.

Cheers.

Everyone,
Thanks for the encouragement on this TT purchase. Unfortunately the seller did not respond to any of my emails requesting discussion about adequate packing, double boxing and insurance. He sent me an email today indicating only that the package shipped (insured) along with the tracking number. Fortunately he has lots of accolades in his feedbacks for great packing including some turntables so I am hoping for the best. Still quite irritating though that he would not respond! Anyone here ever deal with this seller before?

Congrats on your TT purchase. It is irritating that he did not respond yet he is not required to. His obligation ends with him sufficiently packing the item and shipping it to you while fowarding the tracking information. Many of the more frequent sellers cannot deal with individual email requests and just choose to not respond to them. Judging by this guys feedback though looks like you shouldn't have a problem. Good luck.

Update on the Sansui SR-929:
The TT arrived Saturday. Very well packed, double boxed, no damage found. The small parts kit was not taped shut very well so it opened and all the items were rolling around inside including the headshell/cart. Amazing but no damage to the stylus. I do see some marks on the vernier face of the tonearm counterweight where it banged around but nothing serious. No other damage was found. It was a big surprise lifting this out of the box! This is one heavyweight TT with it's cast metal base!

Overall the TT is in excellent condition, I would rate it 8.5 out of 10. It has a few light scratches in the piano black finish and on the dust cover. Pretty typical use marks for a 29 yr old component. It has a couple of minor issues not related to the seller or his packing. First, the table mat is as hard as a rock. It is supposed to be "rubber" according to the manual but it is as hard and brittle as any LP but twice the thickness. It has some chips around the perimeter and it has a big upward bump on the lip making it unuseable. That problem was easily solved with the rubber mat from a Pioneer PL-530 junker that I have on hand. It was a near perfict fit and looks factory installed. The only other minor detail is the clips and monofilament connecting the tonearm to the anti-skate weight arm are missing and have been replaced with a line that was tied on. Other than those minor items set up went fine and the performance is great! I had time to play 3-4 LPs on Sunday running it through my Pioneer SX-5590. I'll post some photos in the Sansui section soon. Thanks for all the encouraging posts. I believe this TT has found a permanent home.

The base is actually a solid particle board enclosure mounted on a resin concrete base, much heavier than aluminum would be. The poop sheet for the table: http://www.classicsansui.net/Turntables.htm#SR929 talks about this and does mention an aluminum motor plate mounted to this base. I will be looking forward to pics of the table, hoping to see some of the display. Permanent home. I would think so. Glad it showed up in good shape.

Congratulations!!

I relayed the story to my wife about the seller's lack of communication regarding packaging and that I hoped it would arrive safely. Glad to hear it did.

If you have all the manuals spend a little time setting everything up if you haven't already. My table came with nothing; not even the original feet. Someone here scanned in the manual a while back and it was invaluable. Absolutely everything was out of calibration. I am currently using a Shure M97XE cartridge with mine and it sounds really good to my ears. Enjoy.
