Hi all, I acquired a pair of SS-1020 Stanley Screamer enclosures. For those unfamiliar, they are 4’x4’x2’ 210lbs 2x15 Altec ported subwoofers. They are massive and beautiful and a questionable purchase. The previous owner cut them to fit 18’s which I want to undo. I have a few questions for the group.

- The biggest hurdle in this project is that the enclosure has fiberglass coating for road use. It is dense and rugged as hell. The plan is to cut out the middle board that was cut to fit 18’s and replace the board to fit the correct size speaker. The problem is that I don’t see any way around cutting the fiberglass that wraps the board. This will likely reduce the structural integrity of the fiberglass wrap and be a pain to reseal from a visual perspective. I’m a woodworking novice and will be leaning on the expertise and tools of a good friend.
- Any suggestions on this repair? Anyone have any experience with this fiberglass and how to reseal it?

- The original speakers came w/ 2x 421-8LF 15”s. I’m in the market for 4 of these if anyone has a lead on a close-to-matching set that aren’t beat to hell.
- If anyone has any experience with these speakers in general, I’m interested to hear from you! Not too much on the web about them other than they may have been used as LF drivers on the Pink Floyd Wall tour back in the early 80’s.
- My plan is to make these original and use them to back a pair of VOTT A7 500’s. I am still working on my power section plans. Ideally, I would use 2 efficient, low-noise, solid state, racked amps w/ a 2 way external XO. (ex. Crown DC? ADCOM GFA's? I have heard neither but seem to be common in similar setups) I found a pair of Altec 1594b’s and while I love the idea of matching the speaks to an original AL amp, the sound just isn’t clean enough. It’s pretty harsh and exhausting. Right now, I am listening to the A7’s w/ my Sansui g-9000 at like a .5/10 on the volume knob. I am rebuilding my ST-70’s which will be fun at home, but if I take this to a venue—would like the reliability of SS. The main purpose is for a live PA for ambient / minimal / drone events. The goal is to be a low noise and low color system with a clear low end. Any suggestions for power amps?
