ST 70 kits

More or less new to Audio Karma . Have asked questions about ST-70 kits and thank those who have responded . To the point -- I am considering buying one of the ST-70 kits available. There are at least two , Triode and bob01605 . If there are others , I would like to know . Has anyone listened to both and compared the sound? I realize this is a VERY subjective question , but would appreciate any input as to the sonic qualitys of these kits . I also realize there are tons of mods and new driver boards out there , so many , I don't even want to think about the amount of homework invovled . I have also heard rumers to the effect that the sound quality of the kit output transformers is not equal to that of the originals with the cloth covered leads. True , or audio legand ? Would appriciate any input from you Dynaco folks . I'm going to "do" a kit and would like to hear any "buzz on the street" from those in the "know" . frankthecat0

I can speak to the aftermarket outputs, but not in a 70. I used them on the Conns I built for Terryblulite, with 6L6s driving them and could not have been happier. They sound fantastic to my ears.:music: They were the ones from Triode.

I've never owned one but have always wanted one when I saw one driving a pair of altecs at a baseball game years ago. A guy on e-bay has the dynaco st120 kits for sale.

If you want to build a Dynaco ST-70 that is just as the original was go to Dynakitparts.com

Kevin has kits for ST-35's, ST-70's, Mark III's and Mark IV's

Sal

I would buy from Bob Latino, he has both replica ST70 and a more powerful ST120. He has a discussion forum here:

I have done some research and the so-called VTA driver board in my opinion, that Bob uses, is the best engineered and has had great reviews. I'm always a sucker for the modern improved replica, whether it be a car, wooden boat, or in this case an amp. I, for one, don't want any of these "old things" to be exactly like the original, because I want improvements which is what Bob offers. I especially like his 120 watt version that uses KT88's and it appears to be a well engineered kit.

A minor thing, maybe, but the chassis that Bob uses has all the original silk-screen lettering on them and are dead-original looking. The ones from triode electronics have no lettering on them.

In other words, make mine a '57 Chevy with modern chassis, A/C, and bigger engine; a sleeper. That is what the ST120 reminds me of...a Hot Rodded sleeper.

I purchased one of Bob's ST 120 amps and can not be more happy. I was on the way to purchase a MC275 but thought I should try the ST 120 at a quarter of the price. I have never thought of purchasing a MC275 since my purchase of the ST 120. Bob is a stand up guy and is available to help when ever needed. You can not go wrong with either of his kits. Many reviews on the net.

Good luck and enjoy the hobby.

I put together one of Bob's ST-70 amps. If you have any questions he answers the phone when you call. His instructions are pretty good, you should have no trouble assembling it. My ST-70 sounds pretty sweet to my ears, I've never heard an original or any other dyna-clones, so I can't offer you any opinion on how the sound compares.

I bought one of Bob's ST-70's two years ago and have used it every day since. It has been perfect and sounds incredible. I have not heard the other one but have compared it to lots of other tube amps and ss and it sounds excellent you really cannot go wrong with it.

I have owned and modified several ST-70s. The original transformers are a bit better than the later Dynaco transformers. Hey! They were made by the same guys, you don't expect they would make it worse on purpose do you? (my bit of philosophy here)

The newer ones are very close copies. They were made by unwinding and reverse engineering the originals. That means we now use better materials, but might have missed a few tricks from the originals.

In my opinion the new stock transformers will sound good and make you happy. But... I would put in a vote for Magnequest upgrade iron ST-70 transformers. They are in the business of iron magic.

Still just my opinion.

The 7199 used in the original ST-70 circuit is no longer in production - one of the upgrade boards using a different tube will be better in the long run.

i'm very happy with my Dynakit ST35 from dynakitparts.com

17'5 Watts per channel is more than enough for my living room
