Stacked Advents, though probably not the ones you're thinking of. Advent Legacy.

I bought two pairs of Advent Legacy's a couple of months ago. I've been working on them off and on since then, when time allows.



The crossovers got new caps installed, a Dayton film and Parts Express NPE. The original wiring was SO thin, it might have been around 20 gauge. Or at least, that's what my wire stripper seemed to suggest. It seemed all corroded inside as well. I replaced the tweeter wires with 18 gauge, and the woofer wires with 14 gauge.



The woofers were refoamed using some quality foams from one of my suppliers. Not all Legacy woofers have filleted surrounds, these ones didn't, so I used some more conventional ones.



Woofer and tweeter wires were soldered in place. I've seen so many old speakers with push on terminals, all corroded and nasty. Do yourself a favor, and solder them on.





I added some washers under the screws, so the screw head wouldn't bite into the nice, new foams and tear them.



Of course, I couldn't have done this without my little helper. He must have thought "why is my human messing with all these woofers, when he has a meower right here".

I absolutely love these. Put them in my bedroom matched with a NAD 3125 and then a Sansui A-909. Sounded great with both amps. The room is rocking! Clear, full sound. Great value.

Though I no longer have the Legacy speakers above (thanks @Asbury Mark), I picked up a set of Legacy III just before Christmas. They had the wrong woofers in, and were missing a grill, but they had potential. The Legacy III have a dual voice coil woofer, and a switch on the back to select 6 ohm or 8 ohm. Since I had no intention of using such a feature, I found a pair of Legacy II woofers that needed refoaming, plus some Legacy II crossovers.

I couldn't decide whether I liked the pictures with the flash or not, so I posted both. Maybe when the weather warms up, I will re-varnish the hardwood top and bottom panels.



For the crossovers, I had a pair of 20uF caps that have been sitting in my "crossover caps" box for a few years now. I paired them with a 12uF cap to make the 32uF on one side of the inductor, and used a 6.2uF on the other side. The woofer runs direct from the speaker terminals, and I used some 14 AWG wire to connect it.

They are currently sitting next to a pair of KEF 104aB. It's always difficult to compare speakers, because they don't all have the same efficiency. I want to build a speaker switch box that allows you to adjust for different efficiencies.

That said, I always thought the Legacy was a bargain. Very similar to the Large Advent sound, but without the vintage price premium.

Hopefully you’ve trained your 14yr. old daughter to leave the dust caps alone….remember when she was 4? My first son twisted off cartridge needles, pushed in dust caps, and hid the tv remote inside the vcr door once. (That was a mystery)

I like their sound very much. There's also a sentimental attachment. When I was a kid, my mom had a pair of these speakers. She used to let me take the grilles off and watch the woofers and passive radiators move. True, this might have been more because of warps in the records, but it was fascinating.

I just did the Advent Legacy II capacitor replacement today. Somebody warned, but I did not listen, to first see what caps were in there since Advent has changed things over the years. I did not first before buying....but eventually I found that currently installed I had 6 uF and 32 uF. From parts-express I bought four 3 uF and two 33 uF. The part where I didn't listen to the advice about looking first before buying....came to affect with the size of the caps....at parts-express I bought the Solen brand: four 3 uF and two 33 uF and everything is quite huge - the 32 uF are like 6x's the size of what was currently in there. I knew the Solens were rated at 400V but I wasn't expecting them to be this huge. I wasn't concerned about the price, I realize the Solens are way more $$$ than the regular Dayton brand that others have used, but the "1%" just impressed me so much that I had to get them. I'm testing them now with Airplay coming from my Yamaha receiver and I'm like "wow", but I'll have to hear them tonight while watching TV to see for sure. I play music in 7.1 and I think I should go back to 2.1.

I refoamed the woofers a few weeks ago. There was nothing left of where the old material was - completely disintegrated.

I wish I took pictures of the crossover setup I did but just imagine huge capacitors NOT glued down to the board. I think they will be fine. They will never be moved before I die....unless I decide to have the oak floors re-done.

I've always been curious about this model. Love the Advent sound, especially stacked, but the fried egg coarseness was a limiting factor. Your work is always exceptionally clean and well thought out.

Even though I just re-worked my pair (foam and caps), there are no markings on them anywhere. I guess I could look it up somewhere, but I have no idea if this model is 4 or 8 ohm and if 4, then I'd be concerned about my power amp running 2 sets of 4 ohm speakers in parallel.
