Stacked Advents

Hi Community
I am brand new to the forum. A German guy living in Canada (Calgary), so excuse grammatical errors please.

My question: At the moment I am using large Advent speakers and I heard wonderful things about stacking them. Unfortunately in my area there are no reasonable offers for a second pair. My only option atm is a pair of the small Advents. Would that be a recommended choice? Or do I have to expect problems or a horrible sound.
I am not an expert by all means. My amp is a Akai AM-2800.
Thanks for your time.

"stacking" usually works best when you have two identical pairs. Once you are talking about combining different pairs, you introduce a number of additional variables. Do they have the same sensitivity rating? If not, then one pair is going to get louder than the other more quickly as you turn up the volume. I have several different pairs of JBLs, which I sometimes run at the same time. I get around their slightly different sensitivity ratings by giving each pair their own amp(s), and the amps have their own gain controls, allowing me to compensate for the differences.

If you're talking about simply connecting both pairs to the same amp/receiver then unfortunately your options are much more limited. You also want both to be no lower than 8-ohms each or connecting both pairs might present a lower-impedance load to your receiver/amp than it can safely handle.

Welcome to Audio Karma.

Large Advent speakers are considered 8 ohm speakers. When you stack two pair of 8 ohm speakers you present a load of 4 ohms to your amp. Most amps can handle this more difficult 4 ohm load. Some cannot. Usually, there is some info written on the amp near the speaker terminals on what loads the amp can handle.

I think I remember that Small Advents are 4 ohm speakers. It's been awhile since I did the math but I believe that an 8 ohm speaker combined with a 4 ohm speaker presents a load of 2.7 ohms. That is a difficult load for many amps.

Thanks guys for your opinions/advice. So I better stay away from the small ones and keep looking for a pair of large ones.

I run stacked Original Large Advents here. My Nikko receiver doesn't seem to have a problem with them at low/moderate listening levels. I also have a pair of Small Advents. I would not stack them with a pair of Large Advents. You might be able to get away with it at low volume but IMO, you would be taking a chance of over stressing your Akai.

Small Advents have a nice sound. To my ear, they have a more balanced midrange than a single pair of Large Advents. If they are cheap enough, you might want to buy them and see what you think.

Stormy,
Welcome to AK. Come to right forum to get info you need.
I've stacked what are called New Large Advent and Advent Ones. Both have same drivers and 8 ohms. They sound better stacked with top speakers flipped.
I've not heard the Small 4 ohm Advents. Many like them. But not a good candidate for stacking with 8 ohm Advents, in my opinion
You can find Advent info in a sticky or thumbtacked thread in this Speaker section. Also in Classicspeakerpages website. Should find specs, pictures etc on different models. Many of them were not given model numbers so are known by name given, by users.

I had a pair of stacked Original Advents for a while. They were driven by a 200 w/ch amp (300 @ 4 ohms) so there was plenty of power for them. I guess the main difference compared to a single pair was that they seemed to be cleaner (less distortion?) at normal listening levels; you were also less aware of them as point sources, which makes some sense given that the sound producing area was enlarged. I never really evaluated them critically for 'imaging' but they didn't smear the illusion of instruments the way a pair of Bose 901s did. Bass was definitely improved over a single pair too.

Ultimately I moved on because I felt the Advents just didn't reproduce the mid and high frequencies as well as I wanted. Still better than the majority of coned, boxed speakers but not what I was looking for...

Thanks again Guys
Any advice is highly appreciated. Maybe I should have done some more research myself, but I thought I get some opinions from the experts.
I don't want to go with small advents as I have already a pair of large ones. I just thought about a cheap upgrade and the small ones were $100 CAD. In my area (Calgary) you have to be really lucky to find something for cheap. There is only one pair of large Advents here at the moment and the asking price is $300!

Stormy,
There is an optional Subscriber level for AK members. Subscribers to AK, for $25/year dues, have access to a Bartertown thread here. In that thread, Subscribers can post offers to buy, sell and trade audio pieces to other subscribers.
There is also Dollars and Sense thread on AK open to all members. There you can ask what the value of gear you have or what is fair price to buy it.

I first had Double Advents in 1973 and twice again after that. Fabulous speaker. Anything that could compete with th was way beyond my price range.

Check Craiglist often - like every day. Large Advents will turn up eventually. There were A LOT of them made. I am in the Vancouver area and see them for sale with some regularity.

Be a little cautious about bogus woofers.

Cool.
Again thanks for all the input. I will for sure subscribe for the Bartertown thread. Hoping to find some decent priced upgrades for my little vintage setup as I am unfortunately always on a budget.
So far I was very lucky with my stuff. A little bit of history: Back in Germany in my twenties ( now I am 55) I was very interested in Stereo stuff and always inherited gear from my Dad like Marantz receivers, Dual TT's and a phenomenal ASC Reel to Reel. Everything though started with an absolute sweet sounding Saba Receiver. Later I jumped on the digital train and all the good stuff went wherever. In my living room now is a 7.1 setup with an Onkyo TX-NR747.
A year ago a co-worker gave me the vintage bug and gifted me with a starter set. Since then I am working my way up by buying and selling my gear. A hard game in Calgary as there is next to nothing for low prices. At the moment in my man cave there is a Akai AM-2800/AT-2650 combo, a Kenwood KD-4100, a JVC KD-A5 and the large Advents of course. In my opinion (but what do I know) a good sounding set.
Okay, that was boring enough........having a beer.
Cheers
