Stanton 500 for 78 - correct one?

Hello,

So I was finally able to get an old Garrard AT6mii running and making music, and I'd like to set it up as a 78 deck because I don't have one yet. After looking at options, briefly thinking about ditching the whole project, then some impulsivity, I bought a "nos" Stanton 500 with a gold body and what was indicated as the original AL Mk2 stylus off the 'bay. The stylus is a white body, silver Stanton logo on one side, blank on other, a blue dot on the front, and red on the actual cantilever. Now as I'm cruising the 78 threads, I'm wondering if this is the right stylus for 78s, or one of the options at any rate, or is it more for the 33s?

You need a 78 rpm stylus.

Ok, so I took those answers for a "no it's not for 78s" and it seems like I'm looking for the black bodied ones, so I'll try to buy one of those or just buy a repro off a needle website.

The colour of the plastic insert doesn't matter, you need something that says "for 78 RPM" or advertises a 3.0 mil stylus tip.

You have an Aqua Dot stylus for microgroove LP at 3 - 5 gram tracking.

The genuine Stanton 78 stylus has a dark blue dot and is 2.7 mil.

Look for a 2.7 or 3 mil stylus for 78s. If not an OEM, you might find a generic replacement will sound good too. Keep in mind that needles made for the Pickering V-15 cartridge also fit on the Stanton 500 cartridge.

Here's a pic of the genuine Stanton 78 stylus. Note that mine has a blue rectangle and not a dot. Bought new around 1999. I use a Stanton 500 on my ELAC/Miracord 40A and have the two styli, one for LPs and one for 78s.

what you want is a diamond elliptical needle for the Stanton, look into D5130EJ

The red paint on the cantilever is to help DJs see it when cueing a record. A 78 RPM stylus would not have this.

The gold-bodied Stanton 500 will be fine (if it's in working order). There are 3rd-pary 78 styli available for it on the internet, not too expensive. Enjoy the fast-spinning.

Is there a certain VTF for 78s, or just the 3-5g? Also wondering if like LPs it’s safer to stick a bit heavier (cart permitting) than too light?

I would use the recommended range for the cartridge, as the suspension, etc. is designed for that force. You can experiment within that range for optimum sound quality.
