Stanton 681 question

Satch

So I'm refurbishing a TT for a friend that is fitted with a Stanton 681 cartridge (no brush). But which 681 is this? Or is the body for all 681's the same and does the needle make the difference? If so, does anybody knows which needle this is? The inscription on the side of the cart reads 6587 (at least that's what I think). All info appreciated!

The number engraved on the body is the serial number, it was calibrated with the original stylus. The stylus you have looks like a D6807A, which is a conical. But a very nice sounding one!

Finally, the cartridge is a 681EE "Calibration Standard" cartridge (as distinct from the later Calibration Standard 681EEE). It was, at the time, Stanton's best cartridge. It, and the other Stanton cartridges of that time, were physically different from the later cartridges, The metal housing for the cartridge is shorter and the plastic at the rear is longer, making the overall length of the cartridge about the same as the later cartridges. Also the mounting tabs are different, resulting in a shallower mounting angle for the cartridge, a change from a 15 degree mounting angle (why the identical Pickering cartridge was called an XV-15) to 20 degrees. Electrically, there's no difference between the earlier and later versions.
