I just bought for silly cheap a very lightly used Stanton 681EE in the original packaging. Its got the cartridge with stylus and stylus gaurd, the screwdriver, and this little metal box in there. The small metal box is empty. What would have lived in there, the installation hardware ?

Is the metal box engraved with the Stanton logo on top?

If that's what it is, it came from the factory with nothing in it. You could put the unused mounting hardware in there after the cartridge was mounted.

In the Berkeley CA area, some people kept illegal recreational pharmaceuticals in that little box.

Yes, the metal box with the Stanton logo. Wasn't sure if it was supposed to be used for storage of music enhancement substances or if it would have had something inside originally.

I just found the mounting hardware under the tray. This thing must be unused. The auction said it most likely was, but the seller couldn't say with absolute certainty. The bag with the hardware has never been opened, all the paperwork is there, the warranty card is not filled out, and looking at the stylus with the little pocket scope shows barely any dust on it, and no visible wear. Not a bad score for 25 bucks I'd say.

I think it was the mounting hardware.
