Starting my setup

The problem is that if a seller does provide insurance, most do, they don't think about the collectable value of a piece of gear. They proceed as if you can just get another.
It's really only worth as much as you paid for it, and rightfully so. If the buyer thinks that it's worth more, he should pay for the extra insurance or pay more for the item.

it seems you and I have different values regarding audio gear.

I'm not here to change anyone's mind, I just offered my experience. You quoted me so I responded.

I don't think we have different values per se. My point is that a seller should not be expected to pay an exorbitant shipping premium just because the buyer believes that the item is worth more than he paid for it. Shipping insurance can more than double the standard shipping charge depending on the coverage amount.

I was referring to how the item is packed, not the cost. You can pack an amp or whatever carefully without spending much on packing material.

I found a Yamaha CA-800 locally for $540. It has been serviced.

The services included:
  • Cleaning
  • Controls and switches de-oxidized
  • Main power supply caps up-sized
  • All electrolytic caps were pulled, tested, and replaced if necessary
  • Transistor in tone stage replaced
  • 520v 5 amp rectifiers in power supply
  • New class A/B to class a transfer switches
  • New power lamp
  • And a full-frequency test was done
I am going to go check it out. It looks really good in the photos.

Ended up getting the Yamaha CA-800. It's in really good condition and had been serviced.

The other units I viewed weren't taken care of.

The sound is amazing.

First setup is complete. Yamaha NS 690, Yamaha CA 800, and a Marantz CD6007.

Thanks everyone for all your help!
