THIS IS NOT TO BE A POLITICAL THREAD. THIS IS ABOUT LOVE AND LOSS.

Hostess.jpg

I spent all day yesterday scouring my neighborhood for Wonder Bread and Drakes Cakes in the wake of the sad news that they will be no more. I have loved my Drakes Cakes (I was never much of a Hostess Man) for over fifty years, man and boy. I remember when Yodels came individually wrapped in blue tin foil with silver stars all over them. Those were my first love! When Funny Bones (Devils food cake with peanut butter creme) came out, I was smitten...SMITTEN, I tell you! Don't even get me started on the difference between the doughy, heavy mass Hostess called a fruit pie vs. the two perfect, flaky fruit filled squares of pure pleasure that were the Drakes Fruit Pie!

The Lovely Blanche came home to see my prizes laid out reverently on the kitchen counter, including the Wonder Bread that she had never had in Canada but came to love here and asked my why I "wasted $15 bucks on junk" She loves me, she tolerates my quirks, but she will never understand some of them. I'll bet a few of you do. What are your memories of Hostess/Drakes/Wonder? Share!

Wait, are you saying Drake's & Hostess are affiliated? I never knew that. :scratch2: My grandma used to force me to eat all kinds of things that were bad for me, and Twinkies was one of her favorites, so she made me eat a lot of those. :D I didn't get into Ho-Ho's or Ding-Dongs, until grade school, but that was a source of several types of trouble, so chocolate cakes weren't really that bad. :D EDIT: I almost forgot, but did you ever eat the Hostess pudding pies? I don't think they made them for very long, but they were DE-LICIOUS. :D

Hostess bought Drakes in the late 90s. You're right about the pudding pies, but I hated the Hostess pies because you could actually taste the lard in the crust.

Drakes Cakes were Kosher because they only used vegetable shortening. No lard, no tallow.

We've had Wonder bread in western Canada as long as I can remember....

The Lovely Blanche grew up in Sudbury and her family never bought it because it was too expensive. Same for me and my family. The only time I got Wonder Bread was when I was at a friend's house.

I didnt realize Wonder Bread was going too. Oh no what am I going to do. It just seems to last so much longer than any of the rest.

Arriving to work in a small print shop many years ago...

6am, no one but me for two hours, pot of black coffee, hostess fruit pie, and Black Sabbath. Good times.:music:

And now they have hit Ebay. I am amazed that this crap is coveted. I for one don't think these treats are going anywhere, the company is just going to sell off the brands.

I grew up in Thunder Bay. I'm not sure if Wonderbread was around when I was a kid. There was a local bakery that made something similar, I think it was call Holsum. The bread would last forever, and never go moldy. We rarely bought it. There was a Dutch bakery down the street that made awesome bread, and that was what was usually around.
I still miss some of the local bakery treats that I can't get here. I've been known to bring back a bunch when I go home.

It's sad to see the demise of an iconic brand. Hostess has been in trouble for over 20 years of mismanagement, ill-advised business decisions and as of the latest, pay cuts and benefit reductions for the workers but pay raises for the top executives.
