Does anyone have any experience with Stax sr-44 cans. I bought a pair from a fellow AK'er and I am totally blown away by them, my reference pair is Grado RS1is with the G-cush pads, I also use Senn HD 650s quite a bit, these Stax more than hold their own with these cans. Just wondered if anyone else uses them.

Hello !

SR44 is SR40 + SRD4
SRD4 is he box and SR40 is the headphone
SR40 is electret and don't need HT voltage to work

the only time i ever heard STAX was at the New England gathering in Feb and my socks were knocked right off.

if i could afford a good set with the EQ/amp, i'd be all over them. a completely enveloping experience.
 
And for complete clarification

SR34 is SR30 (headphone with electret drivers) + SRD4 (same transformers box as SR44 )

the last made was SR84 (more light than all the STAX headphones made before ) and this is SR80 + SRD4 !
 
Add another to the SR44 "happy owners" list. These are the only good headphones I've ever owned/heard...BUT WOW! These things are awesome. So transparent, fast, clear.

Switching back and forth between them and my Kef 103.2's in my office, I feel completely spoiled, in a good way!

The best part about this particular kind of Stax...you can get them cheap! Only had to give $40 for these! I typically see them go on eBay for $100-125...well worth it, even at that price :thmbsp:

I've got a pair of these (SR44) that have been sitting in the closet for longer than I care to admit. I may have to pull these out and give them a listen. I've been thinking that I need some good headphones to listen to music while I'm at work. Have any of you compared these to some of the modern headphones that have come out the last few years? Seems like there's been an explosion in the headphone market recently with many new players.

I used to own a set of Stax Lamda in the early 90's and my current HiFiMAN HE-500s better them in all regards without question.

Interesting. I attended the California Audio Show this past weekend and listened to the Hifiman HE-560s and I was very impressed. Very comfortable and very good sound. Of course they're a lot more expensive than the used Stax SR44 that I own now. Very tempting.
