STAX SR-6 Amplifier & headphone ?

Come across an older STAX SR-6 adapter and STAX lambda SR-A headphone without instructions. My question is can the SR-6 be used with a receiver only or must it be run through a amp?? The one page instructions I see via google are for the sr-6-sb and suggest they must be connected to a amp.

A receiver is an amp and tuner combined. The speaker outputs from a receiver or amp can be used to drive the Stax set up.
