Steely Dan

Yeah, they really had a way with those mu major chord and slash chord progressions.

I was in a band during the late 70's and very early 80's that had two full sets of Steely Dan material. We used to play at least one tune per set until people found out we knew a lot more of their tunes. Depending on the club, we'd usually end up playing at least and entire set of their tunes.

No complaints from me. :thmbsp:

I still occassionally collaborate with other well-versed musicians recording Steely Dan cuts from time to time. The last one was 'Josie' a few years ago.

Wow - Dan Fans! I don't feel like an outcast anymore. Aja was a pivotal album for me. It came out when I was 15 and I remember buying it and having to figure out how to carry it home on my Yamaha 175 motorcycle. I listened to it over and over and started buying all their previous stuff. All my friends were into Van Halen, AC/DC, etc and could not imagine what I saw in the Dan. As far as a favorite album they kind of rotate (no pun intended...) - hard to beat Your Gold Teeth II and Chain Lightning off of Katy Lied though...

AltecDarpa: "The Nightfly" is one of the very first digital recordings. It was done on a prototype 3M 32 track machine. A couple 3M engineers were constantly on hand to keep it fully tweaked. And, as luscious as "Aja" is, I think I must agree with legalalien re: his take on "Gaucho". A few years of technological improvements are very apparent on that recording. My original "Gaucho" was destroyed years ago, and I picked up a very nice copy on the bay last year...sweet. Plus, the remastered CD is absolutely killer. When I win the lottery, I'm buying every exotic vinyl version of "Aja" I can get...then I'm just going to wallow in bliss.

When I heard Aja was about to be released I couldn't wait, but then that was because I loved Royal Scam so much. I still like the music on Royal Scam a little more, but Aja did not disappoint... both are among my all time faves.

Yeah, The Royal Scam is still my favorite Dan album! I just like the songs on that album more than the ones on Aja. Although they are both great albums!

The Royal Scam has the most biting lyrics, that's for sure. I think it's fair to say that Gaucho does have a bit of extra tech benefits, but Aja is a masterpiece IMHO, it has a flow and inner musical details to it that is very special.

My only wish is that Donald Fagan would get more artists to be as fanatical about the final production sound quality as he is.

Was out at my local Goodwill today & got some decent copies of AJA & Prezel logic on vinyl , jusr spun AJA ...... Pure magic!

O.K. fave Dan album for "content" is Katy Lied, fave as far as recording quality is Gaucho and I think my favorite "name" of any album (all artists) is "Can't Buy a Thrill".

Steely Dan albums always sounded great and their concert's have very good sonic's also. They really take pride I wish all groups were as devoted...

i agree. The Dan is #1. All the classic albums are great. However I also have to give a shout out to "2 against nature". I have the DVD Audio version as well as the cd and the audio quality is as you would expect, simply awesome. I like most of the songs on this album too. However, their last release "Everything must go" I just am not quite into that album. Nothing grabs me with that one. However one interesting feature of that release is that mine came with a supplementary DVD called "confessions" where don and walt go out in a cab and drive around all night picking up random people and chat with them as they take them to their destination to promote the album release. That would be a cool chat I must say. Worth a look.
