Steely Dan's "Aja." MoFi vs UHQR.

Very bassey on my system, for some reason ,on all the "Dan " you just played ??/
Dunno.

Those two songs were recorded straight from the phono pre-amp. So no subwoofers. Subs usually add a bit to the lower octave to the recordings.

I am using Raytheon 5751 tubes in the phono pre-amp. These have a deeper bass sound than Sylvania or most European tubes. Also, I have old Audioquest interconnects throughout the setup. Maybe, they are rounding the sound out a bit.

For whatever it's worth, I set my system up not to sound bright. The speakers have horns and a bright setup can really sound over-the-top to me.

Mic'ed recording with subs on.

Thanks, for the comments.

There's digital thrown into the mix, when you are recording to a digital camera, then uploading an MP4 file from your computer to YouTube. But, the sound of what I hear on the YT files and what I hear at home from the system is not that much different.

It took many attempts to get the adjustments and placements close to correct --- maneuvering of recording levels, sound panels, and mic placement to get the recordings to sound good. At least, to minimize bad room acoustics.

It's unbelievable, how room acoustics rears its ugly head on recordings. Your mind eliminates a lot of bad things, in real time. :)

Boy that's the truth! My next great frontier.....and perhaps the most difficult one for many of us who have limitations regarding what can and cannot be changed.

Hahaha, just what I was thinking @Mr Boochie ! I'm very fortunate in this regard as I was moved to jump into the US cleaning camp after getting past the intimidation and just going forward taking one step at a time.....and now all of my records have gotten "the treatment" so I'm listening to them, I believe, in about as good a condition as is possible. But you are so right, @mcgjohn, the difference after US cleaning is nothing short of stunning! I'm veering off center a bit here so I'll let it go at that......thanks for all the informative comments!

thanks. I work in the pharma industry so have access to all sorts of microscopes. Once a person starts looking deep into the groove its hard to believe how much crap is sitting in the bottom of the groove and much smaller particles lining the groove walls.

I do have the NIppon Phonogram (Japan) pressing of "Countdown." Maybe, upload a tune later.

yes Both Nippon PHonogram (formerly Nippon Columbia) and Victor Music pressed the Steely Dan titles for the Japan Market. Both are very good and super quiet pressings but the Nippon pressings are more dynamic (less compression used when cutting the lacquer).

You'd be amazed how small changes to the room or moving panels from one place to another, can change a recording.

Sometimes you don't hear the changes, in real time. But, they show up when listening to the recordings.

Mics pick up everything. Things that the ear and mind seem to be able to edit, when listening live.

That's right! When I'm sitting in my listening position, I can literally change the sound stage by moving my head a couple inches to the left or right.....sounds crazy, but when you're really listening, you can definitely hear the movement on the "stage" in front of you and that's how I nail down where I'm going to be listening from. When you hit the sweet spot, it jumps out at you like magic!!! No doubt about it! Everything seems to be in a perfect balance and the sound is HUGE! This is another discussion, I'm aware, but since it was brought up......carry on, amigos.

Correct!

It's why poor imaging, lack of focus, or vagueness is often not the system's fault. It's the room's dimension and dynamics. The listener's position in that room.

They sound pretty similar to me, too. Maybe, highs a bit clearer on the UHQR. But, that LP is 45 RPMs, which tends to have some advantages over 33RPM --- everything else being equal. :)

I like the drum intro on the MoFi better.
Does the 45 version contain all of the songs on the 33 version?

Just received and played my UHQR copy of "Aja"...it's very, very good. I'll compare it to my older MOFI version at a later date.

Unlike my other UHQR titles, my copy of "Aja" didn't have a sticker with a "serial number" on the outer wrap or case.
Just curious, anyone else missing the SN?

Also received "Northeast Corridor" (Steely Dan Live) and am playing it now... it's "a proper sounding vinyl record". Great performance and recording!

Mine is No. 006947. Engraved on the lower left back, of the gatefold cover.

Chad and co. only sticker the first 1,000 copies on the outside of the box. I'm not sure when this changed from stickering every box but I believe it first happened with Miles KOB 33rpm. Don't quote me on that though.

I played side 1 today on medium loud volume as a send off to a restored 1219 that I passed on to a guy for a Xmas gift for his wife. I have a square full of Dan, a square of Zappa and Bruce Cockburn.
