Step Down Transformer or Variac 120/110 to 100

Hi,

I'm about to purchase a Japanese SA-CD player which requires 100 volts.

I don't want to belabor a topic that has been discussed a fair amount, but my question is fairly specific.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

A transformer is a fairly 'dumb' device that may not deliver the exact specified output voltage because the voltage at a typical NA wall socket is between 110 AND 120 volts (mine reads 121 at the moment).

I've read I need to at least double or triple the power consumption rating of the product be powered (30 watts).

If the output is somewhat higher than 100 volts, say 105 for instance, would that be a cause for concern? Would a variac allow a more precise output? Is there heat or hum issues with either?

Am I overthinking and splitting hairs? I imagine a 'Made for Japan' product tolerates a range in the same way a 'Made for USA' product will.

Any recommendations on brand?

USA voltage is nominally 120V, as you see at your place.

Japan gear should handle roughly same percentage tolerance as other gear, at least +/- 5% for normal function, probably more.

For a small, relatively constant load I would not go too much larger than necessary or the voltage is likely to be on the high side. Transformer secondary voltages are normally listed relative to rated output of the transformer. At lighter load the voltage will be something higher.

Japan has both 50Hz and 60Hz power. US is 60Hz. Is the CDP rated for 60Hz operation?

Personally, I'd just get the stepdown transformer. The line voltages fluctuate in Japan too so there is no need to constantly fiddle a couple volts one way or another with a Variac. In fact, seems a bit risky to me inasmuch as a mistake/accident could supply plenty more than 100V. Mine goes up to 140V output.

Thank you both for your responses. The Japanese version of the product is rated 100V and 50/60Hz. So I should be safe on frequency. I didn't know until I just looked it up.
