Step one of simplifying my life has begun...

Rick Vestal

Have a nice day and duck!
Yes... the BMW has been sent to the farm to live with all the other huge car payments in the world.

I only drive a few thousand miles a year. I don't know why, but I just never drive anywhere. I never have. I even had someone from my insurance company call and ask to verify my yearly mileage once.

So one night it occurred to me, I pay a little over $2.00 a mile based on my car payments and mileage each year, not including gas. Think about that, over $2.00 a mile just to drive. Public transportation in Denver is $2.00 all day anywhere you want to go. I was basically paying the equivalent of cab fare to drive. Nuh-Uh

So this morning, I came across the deal of a lifetime. An Audi A4 2.8 Avant with more service records than Jesus himself (if Jesus drove an Audi) and an owner who is the sales manager of a dealership and is most likely more anal than I am. It isn't the Ultimate Driving Machine, but it also is paid off. And it has room for my mountain bike, and camping gear. I couldn't be happier... This thing REALLY drives well.

Stationwagons are the only way to go I have hauled everything from a 600 pound bandsaw to riding lawnmowers (you have to take off the wheels and steering wheel but besides that they fit perfect) and of course 5 adults and all their luggage, really all they are are crew cab pickups that can haul stuff in the dry, nice little rig ya got there :thmbsp:

I sort of did the same thing a year ago. Had an '05 GTO, and it was the insurance that was insane. Mind you, I have a clean driving record, but the cheapest I found for insurance was ~$180 per month. I sold the goat, made a nice chunk of change, and now I drive a '94 Caprice wagon, that had all of the maintenance records to boot. Now my insurance is a measly $38 per month :). To top it off, it gets about 6mpg more than the GTO too.

I've owned Saabs in the past so I'm no stranger to electrical gremlins. I've seen some WEIRD stuff happen with Saabs. And yes Bob, its Quattro... wouldn't have it any other way. Even tho we haven't had decent snow here in ages.

I had REALLY bad buyers remorse yesterday but after sleeping on it, I feel a lot better. I've gone so many years with car payments of some sort it's kinda freaking me out to not have a payment book in front of me.

I'm starting to waver, but the other way. We haven't had a car payment since 2007 or so. Our newest car is a 2002 Passat GLX and I drive a '65 El Camino every day. I was smitten on the way home last night by the FRS. I had a brief conversation with the owner ('bout my age) at a light. He said it wasn't as powerful or fast as his '08 'vette, but out-handled and out-fun'd it. I'm thinking no **** Sherlock. With the outsourced Sube boxer motor it's CG must be down in the weeds. Then I'm thinking a car payment wouldn't be the worst thing in the world after all. My f'd up back would probably make the decision against for me anyway so I'm safe for now.

Holy Schnikes! I pay 180.00 every six month for my new to me 2000 Trans Am for full coverage! As for VW stuff, yes the electrics get dicey around 100k mi. also replace that timing belt if it has not been done!

You dont live near Detroit ;) :smoke: We have the highest car insurance rates in the nation. Average is ~$2500 per year for full coverage.

Skin deep. Mechanically it's a Subaru WRX. Same frame and drivetrain. AWD with a turbocharged boxer 4 cylinder.

I always like the look of the Audi wagons. I drive a '99 A4 Quattro with some frequency, but it had a 4 cylinder turbo and an automatic. Too bad as it's a damn fine chassis. But I hate the combination of turbo lag and lazy-shifting tranny. I assume the 2.6 will be a different car all together.

Congrats!

I haven't had ONE ISSUE with my 2007 VW GTI - nary a one. THose are the older models not the newer ones.

It is kind of like saying that to a new Jag owner about the ones that were built in the '60's and '70's.

I know the MkV didn't have the afflictions of the MkIV. Late 90s- early 2000s is the generations of VWs I'm thinking of...
