Step up transformer 120V to 220V

I've got an electronic crossover that is designed for 220V at 50 or 60 cycles. I need a step up transformer that converts 120V to 220V, but the step up transformers I've seen convert 110V to 220V and 120V to 240V.

If a 120V to 220V transformer is not available, could the crossover be run using 120V input? How about 240V?

Hello,
in Germany the voltage went up from 220Volt to 230Volt during the eighties, alot of equipment had to tolerate the higher voltage. But even 240Volt should be no problem for your crossover. As long as voltage stays under 250Volt.

Would a Variac be a clean enough source for this use? (I've got a 240V outlet available)
 
Probably be easier and cheaper to change the xformer in the crossover to a 120vac input.IMO

That's not an option with this crossover - it's too nice to hack.


Anyone think that running a 220V unit on 240V will cause any problems?
 
220V or 240V question

Hi there, as a qualified maintenance electrician and also an avid electronic technician, I can tell you that you do NOT have to worry about this small difference in voltage because USUALLY most equipment is designed with a 10% voltage swing in it's design, SOME equipment DO need a tighter tolerance but they are not very common... and they would usually be marked in such a way as to be noticeable.
I do not think you should worry about it, just be aware that using a step-up transformer also increases the primary load current: example: the secondary load is 1amp on 220v so the load on the 120v primary is a little more than 2amps because a transformer is NOT 100% efficient..

Thanks Maurice - then I can either use a 120V to 240V step up transformer, or plug it directly into the 240V outlet in my power conditioner.
