step up transformer

first post...please bear with me...need guidance regarding Stanton 981 low output cart...I understand this is a moving magnet cart that requires a step up to provide gain...all of the info regarding step up's I've viewed refer to moving iron cart's....not sure where to go from here....any help is greatly appreciated...thanks....stu

Moving Iron cartridges do not use a step up transformer - they have the same output level as a moving magnet cartridge. There are several recent threads on AK about SUTs. If you can't find them, let me know and I can send you a couple documents.

The Stanton low output mm cartridges do need a boost. Stanton suggested the use of what they called a pre-preamplifier the Stanton BA-26. This is how I run my own low out put Stanton carts. I have been told that this unit is a head- amp not a SUT. Hope this info is helpful.

So you could use either a head amp or SUT.

That cartridge has a source impedance of 3 ohms and an output of 0.3mV. Your options are
1) cartridge - step-up transformer - mm phonostage
2) cartridge - headamp - mm phonostage
3) cartridge - mc phonostage

Option 2) possibly isn't practical because headamps are as rare as hen's teeth these days. Option 3) is probably the simplest and cheapest. Option 1) would require a step-up transformer with a turns ratio of about 1:16. Anything between 1:10 and 1:20 would be fine. I wouldn't go higher than 1:20.
