Stephens trusonic Low-boy cabinets,,Score!!

Well close but no cigar...my buddy emailed to tell me the diaphragm was fine just the tinsil wire solder point had disconnected but while trying to get into the diaphragm housing he accidently broke a plastic piece inside that he cant repair.
Well nothing ventured nothing gained. There was only a very short piece of the tinsil wire that was exposed{1/4 inch} where it came out of the housing and soldered to the positive post so he had to access the inside to free one winding.re it thru the housing hole and resoldier.Very detailed/fine work ,not easy that's for sure.

Now the search will start for a replacement Tru-sonic 5KT toroid tweeter...

Feh, you'll find one in no time. That auction site that shall remain unsaid has had 2 go up for sale last month. 1 sold, the other one was way too much and went off without a sale. You'll be FINE.

I don't know about the potted crossovers either. I've got 2 similar crossovers made by Wharfedale, haven't messed with them yet. I say, let your ears be your guide. And over time you may find a schematic for it, or a donor crossover and you can make your own, updated.

My thought was that if I was that interested and found a large potted crossover like that I would toss it into a friend's commercial/lab oven. Let the epoxy or whatever it is get to its melting point and drain out.

Yup your right,i'll just lie in the weeds and wait for another to materialize and snap it up.I thought about pulling the one good 5KT and picking up 2 JBL 075's and run them till another 5KT comes along but the 075's have gotten quite pricey! They are the same size tho and could be used as a direct replacement.

Yah think ??? Someone suggested I run the 075's on one of my projects. I went to see what a pair would cost me. I'm not that guy and at this point in my life, I can't see ever being able to afford those. One of those 5KT's sold for 99 bux. That right there is more than doable, even for me. You could also try putting up an ad in Barter Town. That's free and all you need is one.

My tech buddy runs a pair of jbl 2402's{earlier version of the 075} on top of his Stephens Tru-sonic FR 150 full rangers so I know how glorious they sound with those FRers.Listening to my working 5KT they sound almost identicle clean crisp and extended for a horn tweeter,Im a "hunter" so patients is my strong suite...one will show soon!!

What's preventing this plastic part from being glued back together? I've managed to re-assemble quite a few things that looked dead. Mostly a matter of using the right adhesive. Oftentimes plastics can be chemically welded, making a joint that's nearly, if not as, strong as the original piece.

Nashville CL has 24 of those 2402's for sale. I should give the guy a call and see if he'll ship. They're a pretty darned okay price.

I sent him an email late last night asking the same question. He didn't send me a pic of the piece...I think he's probably trying to reglue it.As I said earlier he's good with these things having fixed my one broke Braun horn tweeter,We'll see soon

Yes the 2402's sound just as good to my ears as the 075's and they seem to sell for a couple hun less .You can add these to any speaker you find lacking in the top end with excellent results with a homemade simple x-over

I think the 2402 was sold concurrent with and continued later than the 075. It seems to be the same driver, just with a label and model number that fit the Professional catalog.

Doctorolds pointed those out to me, I wasn't quite sure what to make of them. You've put the proverbial nail into my speaker filled coffin. Thank you sir.

Excellent find, would love to be able to give those a listen.

I too, noticed in some of the first pics that it looked like at least one of the grills was on wrong.

Glad you got them sorted out.

Best of luck getting the tweeter issue sorted out.

right up there with my Fisher 50a find!
I was hopeing there was another owner of these Stephens 3-way load in same/similar cabinets out there in AK land but no one has chimed in.These have to be exceedingly rare as they were offered only in 3 -trim packages{early 60's} with the w150/m8/5kt the top of the line offering and most expensive at the time.probably not many sold as they were ALOT of money in those days

I only read the first page. Did anyone else notice the grill is on backwards in this pic?

yup,we were checking the speakers out top to bottom as we had just got in from a 300 mile return trip and flipping the grill covers on and off.I sorted that out pretty quickly once they were hooked up to the tube amps...lol

Anything Stephens is quite rare, unfortunately.

It is, but I keep running into the 80FR's. I picked up a 3rd one yesterday afternoon. Why? Because. I feel kinda stupid about it now. I've already got a pair running in the living room and have enough mono cabinets to keep me going for while. I've gotta find a use for it, it cannot be left to languish.

Lots of guys just luv those 80frs for open baffle projects.haveing lived with the sound of the Stephens 150fr's I think if I was in your situation id package those up and sell them for a pair of FR150's then add those jbl 2402's on top of the cabs...you could go your grave with that sound Biggs and youd NEVER have to aquire another pair of speakers again...lol

I couldn't agree with you more, and that's what I need to be doing in general. But I'm the guy who sets up the sale, does really well with that aspect. Everything presents like it should and I'll go as far as vacuuming, cleaning up. The guy shows up with a shiny widget that whistles, and mostly works for trade. A shiny whistling widget that mostly works !!!! That's amazing, I gotta have it! The deal is done and I've screwed myself once again. Repeatedly.

So, am a little hesitant.
