Stereo for the bathroom

crackerkorean

Striving for Polymathdom!
I off handedly suggest to my wife that we put a stereo in the bath room so that we dont have to listen to the little boom box we have in there.

To my surprise she liked the idea. So im look for suggestions on what to put in there.

I have two small sherwood receivers 7210 and the 7110 I think. Both pretty small.
And im going to put a CD-I player in there so our bases are covered.

But my main question is what speakers to put in there. Here is a list of what I have and possible plans.

Pioneer CS-99a Garage
Boston Acoustics A-100 Bedroom TV
Cerwin Vega D-1 ??????
RSL ( small ones with an 8" and a tweet ) ?????

I want to keep it small (RSLs) but I dont want to do damage to something either. Would the steam from a bath room damage speakers?

Nab a pair of Polk Atrium 45's or 55's on ebay. Mil-Spec weatherproofing, small, detachable swivel mounting brackets, and sound decent to boot.

Cheers,
Russ

Mike,

You are starting to scare me. How much time do you spend in the bathroom in any given day?

If it were me, I'd custom-build the speakers and locate the stereo just outside the bathroom, in some sort of inset into the wall, or in a closet or in some way to ventilate the installation/protect from moisture.

The speakers I'd custom-build out of solid woods and drivers that were impervious to moist conditions. Almost all speaker enclosures are made with varying quality of particle board, all of which is horrible for a humid environment. Solid wood will resist warping much much more.

Or, even consider some of those smaller indoor-outdoor cheapo KLH's and a sub, perhaps. Hey, you're in the shower or on the pot...doesn't have to be audiophile quality, just better than the boombox!

This might the perfect application for one of those chip amps being discussed- battery powered so no shock issues, apparently good sound and small. Combined with some nice enviromental speakers (I've got some JBL Control 25's I like) you could have unobtrusive low power setup.

I have a mid-60s Zenith tube table radio for that -an H845. It doesn't actually sound good relative to many stereos, but it sounds 'bad' in a good way. ;)

(In the end, I think a great deal of people listen really low quality reproduction because they just imagine the music on cue. Kind of like the American penchant for beer like 'Miller Light' perhaps.)

Not a whole lot but between the time I spend in there in the morning getting ready and the time I spend in there in the evening taking a shower I could probably listen to an album a day.

I was thinking about putting one of the sherwood tuners under one of the sinks. I have them so no investment there to me.
I might just try ot find some cheap out door speakers and I would be set.
Im just glad that my wife is letting me put a setup in every room to free up room on my shelf ( I can only have stuff on the shelf that is not being used as to not accumulate to much stuff)
