Stereo Rehab (Chicago) experience

TLDR; I cannot recommend Stereo Rehab in Chicago enough for anyone wanting their audio equipment serviced by a true professional, who cares equally for your equipment and you.

This past Saturday I took my Marantz 2235B to Stereo Rehab in Chicago for its first service ever. From the moment I walked in, I was treated with nothing but kindness. I was told I was free to explore the waiting/listening room and could play whatever music I wanted on their system while I waited to be seen.

Once Casper, the owner, brought me back to the shop area he walked me through his troubleshooting on the oscilloscope and guided me through some diagnostics while three other customers/friends of his watched. Casper opened my receiver in front of me and told me exactly what defects, OEM component brands, etc. he was looking for. One of his customers even gave me instructions for restoring my WC-22 case.

The whole time Casper was very personable, and asked me questions about everything from what I used the receiver for to where I went to college and what I wanted to do later in life. I have never had an experience with any type of business that was this positive and clearly cared 110% for their customers' equipment, transparency, and enjoyment.

And as a plus, his shop cat was sleeping on the bench next to us and was as friendly as the people in the shop. After my service was quoted, Casper told me everything I needed to know about payment, auditioning before pickup, and then invited me to hang out to talk and share music after he saw another customer.

I will add to this thread with my final thoughts once I pick up my receiver. But for now, all I can say is Stereo Rehab is the only place I will bring my equipment. Well worth the hour and a half drive and working with their limited hours (12-8 Friday and Saturday). Despite being my first time ever coming to his shop, it felt like coming home to an old friend.

I have the same story I can share about Casper and Stereo Rehab so it's nice to hear of others being treated the same way.
I'm a little over an hour trip one way as long as I don't have to deal with any rush hour traffic.
I have had a receiver,2 integrated amps and a tuner in for service and recapping. Also took a power amp and pre amp up there for inspection, expecting to have a full recap done but both units tested great and all in spec, the inspection didn't cost me a dime.
Have been very happy with the work performed!
Here's a picture of his listening/testing area from my last visit, that's my Marantz 1180 DC in the center being tested after it's recap and service.

I see he's not too far from where Van L Speakerworks used to be. Last time I was at his shop he was further east. He is fun to visit with and I ended up spending three hours while he tinkered with my Sonic Frontiers amp.

I’ve also had good experiences with Casper. Just keep in mind that he doesn’t do mods - he only works on gear which he can put back to original operating condition. If your gear is too messed with for him to be able to do so, he’ll decline to work on it. But he won’t charge you for examining it if he does.

^^Yes this is his practice, me will not do any mods whatsoever. I wanted my Sansui AU999 restored and modded per the documented procedure on this site, he wasn’t having it, so I learned to do it myself. Aside from that, he was a pleasant dude to chat with.

I believe his real name is Kaspar. And yeah, he's a master at what he does. An uncanny ability to spot issues within seconds it seems. But of course, that's the intro, and he'll go from there.

He'll tell you the bad news up front, and if you really wish to invest a thorough going through on a piece of gear, like he told me when he went through an old broken, but pretty much mint condition Marantz 2238B Receiver I brought him I explained the unit had great sentimental value to me, he understood, and did his magic.

But alas, the unit went wonky 2 days later, FM wasn't coming in in Stereo. Found it in 5 minute's time, a bad IC and sadly could not fix and had to dig up one off ebay. Two weeks later was done, and has been great ever since.

Kaspar can work on Turntables, Tape Decks, Calibration, etc.Tuner Alignments, he knows exactly what to do, goes through one end to the other, every board, etc, but such services don't come cheap today.

All of his repairs come with a 1 year warranty.

But there are some takeaways and personal dislike to what he does, and what he won't do, and I'll explain such.

Kaspar seems reluctant, refuses to play with anything "Quad", hence his business name "Stereo Rehab", which likely means he won't work on Quad Receivers, Tape Decks like my TEACs, and likely not even wish to go through home theater gear, like my McIntosh MX-130 unit. And that does disappoint me because I know he has the capabilities, that's not the problem.

I also understand he will now not take any units shipped to him from abroad, and that sucks too.

I love Kaspar, I really do. Last time I seen him was mid-December 2022, just for a short visit. I brought him 4 jars of delicious Fruit Spreads, and a Bottle of German Apfel Liqour for the house-etc to enjoy for a Christmas present.

He also once told me he will not play with the big Marantz 2500-2600 Receivers.

I too took my SX-1250 to Kasper because it kept going into protection. He could tell just by looking briefly inside what parts were not original or correct. He replaced with original parts and it plays like new. My wife went with me to pick it up and she loved the cats. I also liked the “Holiday Supplies” that he brewed in the back of his shop that he offers as a refreshment as well as sells for take homeDABA1442-46C2-47D5-B3DD-5B8D35A4D5A9.jpeg . All in all a unique and pleasant experience. Here is my baby on the audition rack…
