Steve Vai will never be Larry Carlton, but Larry will never be Steve. To nitpick his talent and ability shows you never have played guitar, I'm in awe of everyone mentioned and many more! Too much noodling? Try it some time!

The difference between him and other great rock guitarists is he actually studied music and music theory.. something that took him to a level most rockers can't even begin to comprehend..

And that is why he dovetailed perfectly with Zappa.

Al Di Meola has matured a lot since his early to middle career....He is such a more nuanced player now....beautiful music, not just guitar scales, which is what some jazzers were all about...

Al and John McLaughlin are now 2 of my favs compared to when they started...in the 70's I had heated discussions why I thought Steve Howe was the greatest, which I still believe he is, but I love the 90's and 21st century Al and John Mc...

The newer cadre seems like all flash and lacking in flexibility.
