Stiffen the PL-12D hinges?

Is there a way to stiffen the hinges of PL-12D turntable? I am asking because in my entertainment center I can only open the dust cover so far up. It is pain in the neck to keep it with one hand and put record with the other one.

Thanks.

Thanks for replies. I will look into using washers as shims to stiffen the hinges as removing the dust cover all together is not an option.

Celt's approach is similar to what I did on a table where the hinges wouldn't support the additional of a Lenco lamp that clipped to the dustcover. I popped one of the mounting screws from each side and replaced those with longer screws. The longer the screws, the greater the leverage. One nut and washer served to lock the dustcover to the hinge, and I added a couple extra nuts with a flat washer to those. I could then walk the nuts and washers up and down the threads as needed to provide the correct counterbalancing. Just save the original screws if you want to restore it later.
