Stoner Rock and Doom Metal

Great thread. I'm gonna check out Boris.

I've always had a thing for Monster Magnet. "Dopes to Infinity" is my fave.

I stumbled across a band called 500 feet of pipe. Great stoner band with song titles like, 420 TO GO, and GOING TO A DOPE DEAL.

Of Course Fu Manchu is cool, they are re-uniting for a show this month in San Francisco.

There are many other great...hey, let's go get something to eat man.......

Been into stoner rock for awhile too. A couple of friends turned me onto it. some of the bands that I have are:

500 feet of pipe, Brant Bjork(all incarnations), Boris, Green Leaf, Colour Haze, Electric Wizard, EYEHATEGOD, Fu Manchu(must have IMO), ****EMOS, Earthlings, Wellwater Conspiracy,The Heads, Isis, Grails, High on Fire, La Ira De Dios, Kyuss, QOTSA, Desert Sessions, Maserati, OM, Sleep, Pelican, UFOMAMMUT, Morkobot, Sula Basana, Weltraumstaunen, Zone Six, Los Natas, Melvins, Monster Magnet, Earthride, Spirit Caravan, Slo burn, Unida, Hermano, Dozer, Orange Goblin, Nebula, Lowrider, Earth, Sunn O)))), Pentagram, Dust, Blue Cheer.

Although I would say that Kyuss is the band that really helped kickstart this genre, I cannot deny Blue Cheer the title of the FIRST true stoner rock band. Dust and budgie had alot of influence on these bands as well as the obvious Sabbath.

.

I haven't heard much else by Boris, I have heard mixed things on Pink. Would you suggest one over the other?

Pink will definitely give your amp a workout! Its a VERY heavily distorted and compressed recording and by the final track my CR 1020 was on the verge of cooking. Of course I had it cranked to just below clipping but I could smell the faint odor of frying electronics. The top grill was way to hot to keep my hand on for more than a second or two. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! Enjoy! :D

... The highlights of their oeuvre so far:

Boris: Flood, Pink, ...

Flood, pink? Is that anything like Pink Floyd? :D

Seriously, I remember seeing stoners and rockers at rock concerts back in the sixties and seventies. Back then they were often the same people, so most rock could have been called stoner rock...

Anyway, more than half of these "stoner rock" bands mentioned in this thread I've never even HEARD of! Threads like this make me KNOW I'm getting old... I think I have some "homework listening" ahead. Would love to discover something new and likeable among them. Thanks for this thread.

had that 1st Masters of Reality going on the cassette walkman all day. What a sound. Remeber first hearing them on that Def American comp in the 80's, being hooked, finding tape, losing tape, then for some reason totally forgetting about the band altogether til a couple of years ago. Damn tough to track down the LP at a reasonable price. Also recommend the Candy Song 7", more thump than lp version. The live at the Viper Room tape also has a majestic version of Doraldina's Prophecies

anyway so bored i typed out my favourite 42 Doom Metal lp's

Genre'd from discogs. (odd how discogs don't recognise BLACK SABBATH as doom metal)

42 Sleep - Dopesmoker - most would have this higher but it's just too hectic for me

3 Harvey Milk - Courtesy And Good Will Toward Men
2 Neurosis - Times Of Grace. my #1 from the day it came out in late 90's until about 2 years ago when...
1 Harvey Milk - A Small Turn Of Human Kindness. Perfection. The apogee of misery. The nadir of No. Sounds like one seamless track, the soundtrack to despair. Starts slow and stays slow. They take their sweet motherfucking time doing ANYTHING here. The music comes to them, they do not go to it. The great ones seem to have all the time in the world. Put this on with unwelcome guests over and they will NEVER come back. NOT for listening to in the company of others. **** em, you dont need them. You've got this.

I like a lot of Sunn O))) and Boris, which I regard as "drone", not "stoner" works.

@ "black metal" I adore (most of) Bathory and like a lot of Opeth. I am not keen on the work of Burzum, Darkthrone, or Mayhem.

In the more genuine "stoner" vein, I enjoy some of Kyuss.

^^^
PS: forgot about Samael. A couple of pretty solid LPs from that outfit out there. There's also a lotta good Russian, Ukrainian, and (especially) Finnish "dark metal" floating out @ the ether. Korpiklaani (Finland) are particularly adept.
