Strange noise in FM Station............

Last night I'm listening to my FM Jazz Station, and I hear a noise every 10 seconds, very rhythmically. It makes my tube tuner thump and the stereo light flicks with every thump. I think it is probably a reception problem, so I fool with antennas etc. Switch stations, no noise there.

- Then I hook up another 2 tuners. I hear the same noise, but now it sounds like a turntable that has reached the end of the song and continues to 'thump' every 10 seconds. Makes the station not listenable.

So this afternoon, I sit down to listen to some Jazz, turn on the Tuner and there is the same noise. I decide to call the station after 24 hours of this noise to see if they know what is happening. I look up the 'technical guy' on-line and call him about this noise. After he wakes up from his afternoon nap, He says "Wow we are usually the first to know - but we don't have a clue, but we'll check it out".

I continue listening for about 15 minutes, and all of a sudden the noise is completely gone after 24 hours of a non-stop thumping, clicking noise. I send the technical guy an e-mail and tell him that he has fixed the problem and I am curious as to what the problem was. He sends me a return e-mail, telling me that he checked everything out and could find nothing wrong.

Well - maybe nothing wrong that he'd admit to, but I doubt this was a coincidence. - I think they had a turntable that was thumping away for a couple days! - I contribute to this station and I hope they stay on the air, but it sounded like **** for over 24 hours.

I have fixed a lot of problems with my system over the years. Bad Cables, tubes, connections, ground loops etc. etc, but this is the first time I had to call a radio station !

Problem with their MPX encoder or preemphasis, maybe?

I'm thinking something that would cause your MPX decoder to lose lock on the 19KHz pilot tone...don't think just leaving a turntable on would do that.

You certainly may be right, as I know nothing about FM Stations. Funny though!

Might look at your antenna. Used to get some Gawd awfull noises on my tuner. Replaced the 300 ohm leads with shielded cable and it went away.

It had nothing to do with my antenna !! --- Read my post! - I have shielded cable throughout. The noise is gone!

I have had the same antenna for 8 years listening to this station. It is mounted in my attic and is positioned exactly for this station.

The AOR station I listen to had leakage of a satellite sports channel - very audible - for about 2 weeks. I emailed them & suddenly it was fixed. No reply email ever!
