Strange rewind problem with Pioneer CT-F650

Picked up an old CT-F650 from a guy who said he serviced it, but it doesn't run totally flawlessly.

Play and FF seem to work fine, but Rewind really seems to struggle--moves really slow, like it's laboring. The weird thing is that it seems to get worse towards the beginning of a tape. If I stop halfway through a tape and hit rewind, it will go pretty normally for a while, then, towards the beginning, it starts slowing down and eventually gives up before it can go all the way back. I have to flip the tape and fast forward to finish.

Is this an idler tire problem maybe? I think it's strange that it's worse at the beginning of tapes. Have tried it with several cassettes with the same result.

Sounds like time for a complete belt change. While in there you can answer the question of whether you have a idle clutch problem also.
 
Dear witch_trial, how did you solve the rewind problem? I have a CT-F400 (CT-F615 in US) and have the exact same issue. Thanks.

I did, I had to take it into a service shop for an overhaul. It was in need of all new rubber. The guy told me it was the idler tire being hardened after years and years and it wasn't able to fully grip when rewinding. The reason it slowed down near the beginning of the tape is simply because the machine needs more torque and the tire was slipping more.

Also had all the belts changed. Can't recommend a full rubber overhaul enough. And likely an internal play/record switch cleaning with deoxit

Yepppp. It was a good learning experience. Haven't owned a tape deck for decades, so this 650 was my first exposure to the world of vintage tape decks. Now I'm a little smarter. Would rather just buy a machine in good cosmetic shape that is sold very clearly as "powers up, motor runs, but some issues". Easy to get a deck for 50 bucks and pay 100 dollars to have it completely overhauled than to spend 400 on a "serviced" deck.
