Streaming/Internet Radio Hardware

Might want to install the TuneIn app on your phone/tablet, then Chromecast The Jonathan Channel. Jonathan Schwartz knows Sinatra's music better than just about anyone.
Back in the day, he was the main reason I subscribed to XM Radio...back when he was the main host on Frank's Place. Nice to know he has his own channel, I may have to add that station to my Echo. Nancy hates him, so I wondered if he would stick around after she was added to the channel. I think they may have moved him to the 40s channel, but I lost track.

Back in the day, I listed to Jonathan Schwartz on WNEW-AM, '1130 in New York.' I got hooked on WNEW & standards almost by osmisis. I used to work for my Dad and the only station he would listen to was WNEW. Without even realizing it I got hooked on that music. By the time I reached 30 I was listening to WNEW on my own, Jonathan, Ted Brown, WIlliam B WIlliams, Julius LaRoosa, Martin Block, etc...

I'm REALLY dating myself now.

I bought the Chromecast Audio this morning. Including a decent TOSLINK cable (Audioquest Forest) the whole package came out to $90. I'm streaming now but according to my DAC everything I've streamed today has bit 48k/24 bit. Is that a Chromecast limitation or am I finding only low def streams.

PS Audio says the TOSLINK input will accept up to 96k (the other inputs accept up to 192k)

EDIT: What I have found is that casting hi-res internet radio streams via Chrome downconverts to 24/48khz I have read that previously Chromecast didn't support 24/96. However when I use PLEX to cast 24/96 music that's on my PC Chromecast outputs it in native 24/96. Is there an app that will pass 24/96 internet radio to Chromecast Audio or is there some specific setting in Chrome I need to change?

Thanks!

The Chromecast Audio device is outstanding in my opinion. Very convenient, and very good sound quality. I stream Pandora and Spotify through it.

I tried bluetooth streamers, Grace Digital, and others. The CCA is a winner hands down for me.

And at $35, it's a steal.

How are you streaming hi-res internet radio? When using the Chrome cast function it is converting hi-res to 24/48. When I stream FLAC music stored on my PC through Plex it streams at 24/96 but PLEX doesn't do radio and that's what I bought CCA for.

There is no hi-res internet radio. Tidal streams at CD quality 16/44.1 but that is a pay service. Internet radio is no where near that. They are mostly low-res streams. Linn radio streams at 320kbps mp3 which is very good. The CCA will play 24/96 files from your own library or pay service (if there is one).

I thought there were 24/96 online audio streams. Maybe not...

I haven't heard of any.
Tidal is the premier stream service for quality. You can get a 3 month free subscription by downloading the Sennhieser Captune app, sign up for Tidal, then go to Tidal directly with your new sign in ID.
You should be able to find something you like.
Otherwise there are many thousands of radio streams, but usually at 192kb/s, the occasional one does 320.

I have been enjoying it with the chromecast for a few weeks now. It does drop the connection frequently, but that maybe due to my ancient iPad or perhaps the Tidal app, or network overload, most likely it's the iPad.

Take a look at the yamaha wxc-50 .....
May do what you're trying to accomplish...
Can be used in either preamp or player mode .....and capable of high res streams....

It is most likely your wifi. If Tidal is setup like most Casting apps, the iPad simply tells the service to stream to the Chromecast Audio device and at that point, the job of the iPad is done until you tell it to pause, skip, etc. With Airplay, the iPad would actually be involved in the actual streaming process, but that isn't typically the case with Casting.

Linn has some nice 320k selections (I like their jazz channel).

^^^ Yep, casting means your iPad is just a remote control, stream doesn't go through it at all. CCA has a tiny antenna, needs a good strong WiFi signal with minimal interference. Investing in a high quality wireless router is increasingly necessary with all the wireless streaming gadgets in our homes these days. Also make sure you use the clearest channel, there aren't many of them, and your neighbors may be sharing the one you are on.

I agree. Most (if not all) issues with streaming are related to the wifi router or the wifi router setup. I use the TP Link Google On Hub in bridge mode and it works great.

I am not streaming "hi-res" internet radio. Tidal has a "hi-res" option which I think is CD quality,... I think. Please correct me if that is wrong. mp3 format is not hi-res, although at 320kbps, it's getting pretty tough to tell the difference between mp3 320kbps and CD quality.

I would have thought that 24/48 IS hi-res. There I go thinking again....

I am using one of these: https://www.amazon.com/WELLWIN-quad...3?ie=UTF8&qid=1479366439&sr=8-3&keywords=T95N

It is a fully loaded M8S Pro Android Streaming Box in a mini package. I use the "Radio" add-on for Kodi, as well as the Pandora app running in high res mode. It does not have a digital audio output, but it does have audio out on HDMI as well as AV connectors. It sounds very nice in my main rig. This is all in addition to being able to watch whatever movie or TV show you want, in up to 4K resolution.

Enjoy,
Rich P

Good to know. My network is now provided by Bell Fibe, and I don't know if I can actually change the channel or not. I put the CCA behind the receiver in among a nest of wires, so I think I will fish it out of there and to give it a more clear signal path. Often I will be streaming at high res, with a HDtv on and maybe another device streaming video. It is likely overtaxed at that point. If it is just me on Tidal, things are pretty good.

On a side note, it seems my CCA never actually shuts off even plugged into "switched" power on my receiver. It seems to still get enough juice to remain on.

There are two separate issues. There is the bandwidth provided by your internet provider and then there is the separate issue of your wifi router setup.

The problem can occur in either place, but if you have trouble streaming music from drives on your own network (meaning files that originate on your hard drive), then there is a problem with at least your wifi router.

There could be a problem with your internet bandwidth, as well, but I would stream my own files to see if I still have an issue and narrow down at least one possible culprit.
