Stromberg Carlson ASR-120

I have a Stromberg Carlson ASR-120 tube amp pulled out of a console.

I have re-capped it accept for the power multi cap. It has all original tubes. It works and sound OK. No noise or anything.

My issues is that it seems to be balanced in such a way that it has a lot of treble.

I am pretty new to tube audio and this is my first 7408/6v6 amp. Is this normal for this amp or this type of amp?

My only other tube amp to compare this to is a push pull Packard Bell 6bq5 with all original tubes out of a console. This is a much more mellow sounding amp than the Stromberg is. It has also been recapped accept for the power cap.

Thanks for any information you can give me.

is it a lot of treble or a lack of bass?

many of the console 6v6's did not have a low frequency response
I have had several of the above amps. I would have described it as more like it needed a sub

Thanks for the response.

It doesn't seem to have a lack of bottom end to my ears. It just seems to be a bit bright.

Right now I have some Allison Krause playing, the bottom end sounds fine but the treble just seams to much. This is using EPI M150's that have new caps in them along with new Pots for the tweeters. They have been broken in with many hours on them.
Currently I have the tweeters turned down to about 25 percent.

I have also tried a couple other sets of of speakers like some Paradigm Atom V2's and they were so bright as to be unlistenable with some types of music.

Since I usually run passive preamps without the treble and base adjustments or very simple active preamps, if the speaker doesn't have a tweeter adjustment on it I pretty much have to live with the sound of the amp.

I do want to say that on this amp I did try it with the 2 caps on the end of the board bypassed for a while. I then added them back in after a while because of the amp having to much treble. It seemed to make a small to no difference for the sound of the top end.

with no pre amp to color the EQ its going to sound kind of blah. get a pre amp with bass and treble knobs will give you what your looking for.

You may find the bass is in a tube pre amp so you have EQ controls before you ASR- 120
