Stromberg Carlson help!!!

Hey everyone! I just recently inherited this from my grandmother and grandfather. I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about this. Please help me out!! This is my first time on a forum so please be forgiving about my lack of knowledge.

I can tell you that the amplifier is an ASR-433.

Congratulations on inheriting such a beautiful console and piece of history.

Tuner I think is the SR-445. Its basically an AM and an FM tuner bolted together. The early ones were very clearly this behind the faceplate, you could see the two chassis form a line down the middle where they were attached.

Changer appears to be a Garrard RC88

Its nice equipment. S-C was more known for making telephone stuff but they also made some high quality commercial amps and home hifi as well. They also made some pretty nice speakers. No idea if this has them, but the S-C speakers usually had chrome frames and red cones so its fairly easy to ID them.

usual old equipment warnings apply here. The caps in those things are overdue for replacement, and the changer grease is probably closer to glue than lubricant at this point in time but its worth having it serviced so it works as intended. There should also be at least one free input on that amplifier so you can pair it with another more modern source if you want to.

I happen to have a couple of ASR-433's and they are wonderful amplifiers.
A copy of a S/C 1960 catalog that I have shows that amplifier, so your console is probably dated around that year.

It was more than likely a major purchase for your grandparents and is a quality unit.

Please heed Gadget's advice on repair.
Personally, I would not plug it in until a knowledgeable person services it.

Well worth restoring from both a technical and nostalgic viewpoint.

Thats AM/FM simulcast, it went extinct in 1962 when FM stereo came about, so prior to that point. I think the Garrard RC88 came out in '59 or '60 so that should give a relatively narrow window.

The Garrard RC-88 was older than 1959, began as a mono era changer, then rewired for Stereo. This console's definitely 1960. and top of the line Stromberg-Carlson and legitimate HiFi on par with Fisher or Ampex of the same class. Note: S-C was a major maker of Telephone equipment, and a military contractor, then owned by General Dynamics. Their equipment was of the highest quality.
