Stromberg-Carlson tube tuner

Dan Schafer

Hi All
I have an old Stromberg-Carlson simal-cast tube tuner circa 1960. I think model SR-445. I retro-fitted it with a modern phase lock loop multiplex stereo circuit which works well. Just wondering if Stromberg-Carlson made a multi-plex unit for it? I know at the time there were alot of stand-alone multiplex units, but I'd like to come across a Stromberg-Carlson unit if there was ever one made by them. If so, I'm in the market for one.
Thanks

Yes, they made a solid state multiplex adapter - MX-477 ... I have the instructions, but not the Sams folder for it - it will be on my web page when I do... http://www.audiophool.cjb.net/MadeInRoch.html

A friend had one, I think he tossed it out...

Hey Tom thanks for the very helpful reply. I could not get the instructions to load from your web site. I may not have Dejavoo or waht ever it is. I also collect Stromberg-Carlson stuff. Now I know what to look for! I also have never done an alignment on one of these units before. I have had Stromberg-Carlson on my watch list for eBay for a few years and have never seen one come up. I actually have two of these tuners a model SR-445 and a SR-445A which matches my ARS 880G amp with 7355 output tubes. Is there a photo available of the two MPX units that Stromberg-Carlson made? Boy it sure would be nice to find one that matches my gold flash matching units. Would make the whole system complete. I won both the gold amp and tuner together on ebay for $90.00...A good deal NO? However, I never even tried it out yet after 2 years. There is some rust on the chassis and will bring it up on my variac someday. The dial lenses fell off from the aged glue...I guess gorilla glue will work to secure them, very glad I found them loose in the packing material when I received it, I thought they were missing. The SR-445 with out the gold flash trim I retro-fitted with a Phase lock loop circuit and drilled a hole in the center for the stereo signal LED. Hope that is acceptable as far as its collectability. I wish McIntosh would have bought Stromberg-Carlson or at least the name...I think some dumb outfit bought the name and they make truck bumpers or some such crap.
Alot of these Stromberg-Carlson unit I noticed never seem to come with cabinet covers. Where they sold without them? None of my units have covers and the ones I see on eBay never seem to either...what's up with that?
Also I have almost the entire Sam's library and I have the MPX schematic see attached. Also here is my favorate vintage Stromberg-Carlson TV a TC-125 from 1948 what a beauty! The photo of the TV is not the one I have, mine is in better shape which I thought I had a photo of but don't at this time. I can PM you also and can contribute the print to your nice web site.

P.S. for some reason I am unable to add the MPX print to this post, so I'll PM you.

I think most of the Stromberg equipment was sold in consoles, so it didn't get covers. A friend bought a stand-alone AM tuner at last year's Rochester hamfest - only one I've seen with a cover. My ASR-444 also has the maroon cover, only color I've seen, though they offered several other colors. I'd be happy to get any Stromberg info I'm missing, either as scans or as a loan, to fill in the blanks. tbavis(at)rochester(dot)rr(dot)com.

DjVu gives very efficient storage, maybe 20% of the size of PDF, and once you have the plug-in, it works the same as PDF - there are a few other programs you can use, but the plug-in is most convenient - see my web site.

Dan,
Just curious but what outboard mpx did you make up? I have a 445a as well and for my money it's probably as good as anything I've ever heard in mono. If one could put a decent quiet mpx behind it..........

What is a 445a? ...Oh is that your Stromberg-Carlson model tuner? I have one also, with the gold flash to it. I just used an ECG 1217/NTE 1217 Phase lock loop IC chip and built a seperate circuit & power supply for it. No alignment needed! It works great but drilled a hole in the front panal to accomodate the LED stereo signal indicator. I will post a photo when I get a new camera, mine is currently out of commission. I did this in like 1981 or 1982, so there my be a better choice/method today. I'd like to know if there is. I like to match these old tuners with the MPX adaptors of the time. May be easier to just find an old stand-alone MPX unit. I have never seen the MPX adaptors by Stromberg-Carlson. Maybe at that one special garage sale or flea market someday. I need to learn how to align them also.
Thanks
