Studer Speaker

Any one have a source for how to interpret Studer speaker numbering? I accidentally blew one of mine and I want to understand its characteristics so I can replace it / repair it perhaps with a different brand. Maybe someone could also point me to a reference to understand how to measure/quantify a speaker's traits? The easiest solution would be to buy the same exact part number but I can't locate the exact one but can find some similar. I'm hoping that there is a sequence that means if I can find some in the same vicinity they would suffice as a replacement.

Any suggestions?

The speaker in question is a Studer 1.085.576

Contact Richard So and see if he can replace the voice coil with a similar match from Braun/ADS parts bins. You may want to send him both so he can match them and rebuild them both.

baco is absolutely correct. Whenever you replace drivers, they're best done in pairs, whether it be woofers, mids, and/or tweeters. I don't believe Studer made the drivers. They were primarily tape machines. They sure look like ADS drivers as baco pointed out. That would seem to be a good starting point.

It’s definitely not an ADS driver. But it’s German and probably shares some of the same parts like cones and voice coils.

Looks like it. I bet it's probably like a 7" driver, and someone cut down an 8" surround to fit?

Nothing fundamentally wrong with that- if it's done correctly...

Yes, that is a splice because these are European speakers with ever so slightly different dimensions and the dude I had redo them used something he had in stock with Imperial units.

So. Drumroll please. I’m one fortunate son, because Richard So happens to live about 5 minutes from my office. You all and your posts sent me on the way to success and I’m thankful.

In about 30 seconds of looking at my speaker he diagnosed the problem and offered a few paths forward. If you ever want to passionately discuss speaker structure talk to Richard, he is the man! Turns out the splice done to my woofer May have led to a small split in the cone that led to the wire coming loose when the speaker was accidentally played VERY loud. Anyway, doubly awesome was that Richard also happens to have ADS parts readily available which were able to just “drop right in”. He mentioned the speakers were very similar to Braun ( and ADS) which makes sense given their German origin. (Not sure if I mentioned the woofer came from a Revox Forum B 3 way speaker) Anyway, Richard So is the best and thank you for pointing me to him!
