Stylus Advice

JJ: The description for that LPGear needle has contradicting specs regarding the tip radii, and the pictured needle also wouldn't appear to sport a beryllium cantilever.

Hence I'd rather suggest to consider a new old stock ATN142LP, which Goldringstylus(.com.au) still offers under their code D1110LP for AU$ 175, in case you'd use it on a reasonably light arm, or a new VMN40ML, in case you'd use it on a light to medium-heavy arm.

JJ: Hard to estimate, especially as I haven't got any personal experience with the PS-X7 - but, yup, I'd assume the VMN40ML to be the safer option.

What do you think?

I'd rather be inclined to buy the complete cartridge in this case - 'cause those newer needles with the x in the suffix have a lower compliance (both static and dynamic), so that some more body weight wouldn't harm. I wonder, why you'd like to buy a Shibata variant, though - 'cause I see no benefit in that compared to the ML. Hence I'd rather suggest to consider the AT-VM740xML (or the -VM745xML, in case you'd prefer a boron cantilever).

Manfred, going to be used with CD-4 through a QX-949A or QRX-7001 and a SL-1600 ll turntable. Figured since the Shibata was designed for CD-4 I'd get that. Do you think the ML would be better for CD-4?

Can say the ML on the AM40S sounds better than the AT15Sa w/shibata. Just didn't want to assume ML was better for CD-4 in all cases.

The AT15Sa body has a better potential to play CD-4 though.
It has a lower inductance than the Signet AM40 body (if the specs given in their user manuals are correct that is) which means the electrical resonance (rlc) will happen at a higher frequency and will be less severe resulting in higher signal strength at the frequencies of the carrier wave. High complinance could improve tracking at these frequencies too though
But I assume stylus condition is more important in this case.

Thanks amigos. Think I got the Shabata for the 15Sa from Jico and it's newer than the ML on the Signet. Maybe not the the best copy.

Anyhow, I ordered the AT-VM740xML so I'll test it when it shows in a day or two.

@mr_petit , have a Zero 100 that's giving me fits. Cleaned, and cleaned and cleaned and cleaned, etc. Relubed and it still misbehaves on the first start of the day.
I'm using it but cue it manually for the first side to keep it from stopping/struggling to make it through the auto cycle. It returns at the end of the side and acts normally in Auto thereafter. It's like something is a little tight somewhere even after I thoroughly greased it. In a really nice case.
