Stylus Recommendation - KLH Model 20 with Garrard 3000 changer

I would like to get an elliptical, if that would work on a heavy-tracking changer. Does anyone have a suggestion? The cart is a Pickering v-15HB.

I'm really new to this, so I'll be that guy: Just tell me what to do, please. :withstpd:

an eqivalent of the wide body stylus, similar to the Stanton 500. It used them back in the day. Some were red, some were black. D-ATE might be a good place to start for comparison. There were many different stylii in the old V15 series.

Stanton 500 AL stylus works fine as does the Pickering equivalent. Tracks 3 grams.

Are you sure, Kent? I think the proprietary mount on the V15HB prevents the use of any stylus except the wide body Pickerings.

To the OP:

The tables were shipped with the D AT 2 conical which tracks between 2 and 5 grams. The elliptical that would be most appropriate is the D ATE 2, with the same VTF specs and the same fit. Here you can buy either an original for $35.00 (the 605-DET) or a good generic for $16.00 (4605-DET).

As you'll see, these have a "Dustamatic" brush. This is the only difference between these and the original. The brush requires an additional 1 gram of VTF which is not terribly easy to adjust on these Garrards, especially for a self-described novice, but the brush can be easily removed.

Technically, you can put the 500AL on the Pickering if you get out an exacto knife and lop the top part of the housing off. Not pretty, but it does work. Not something I'm going to recommend to newcomers though.

To the OP -- boreas' link above will get you to the best deals on styli. I would go for the 605-DEC ($3 cheaper than the DET, and the C stands for "changers," although I've never known what that meant in terms of differences to the actual stylus). Or if you're on a budget, try the 4605-DET.

Be aware -- for Pickering/Stanton styli, OEM vs generic will make a bigger difference than elliptical vs conical. The OEMs have some magic mojo that the aftermarkets never quite get.

you're really looking at Pickering V15 nails if you want one that just fits on there nicely. The Stanton ones are electrically compatible but that particular setup on the 3000 makes it so nothing but a V15 stylus fits without modification.

I might go conical too, try a D7C stylus. I ran one of those on the KLH 24 I used to have, and it did very well. It tracked at 3 grams and sounded very good.
