Sub recommendations for vintage set-up

Hello Audio Karma,


I currently have a two-speaker set up that I really love. Everything I have is from the 70's/early 80's except for a PSW10 sub:

Sansui FR-D3 table
Sansui AU-555A amp
AT-95E/Stanton 500 MKII cartridges
Luxman LX 105 MK11 speakers
PSW10 sub

I don't hate the PSW10, but I would be interested in switching it out with something from the same era as all my other equipment and I'm not entirely sure what to look for.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hsu and Velodyne subs are well respected. To keep it simple look for a sub that weight at least say 35#'s, if they didnt put the effort into a solid cabinet the odds are they didnt put much effort into the amp, crossover, port or speaker either.

From that ere, I'll second Miller and Kreisel.

My first subs were JBL back in the day. No complaints with old JBL stuff. I still have one holding up an amp. ;)

That’s a good point, it doesn’t need to be and I’d be open to that as well. As long as what I have can fully benefit from adding a piece with the ‘latest technology’

Make sure to get a sub that has high level inputs. You need them to properly connect a sub to a 2-channel audio system. REL, SVS, and JL Audio are top modern brands.
 
I'm planning to try one or two RSL Speedwoofer 12s with my vintage Klipsch LSI splits.

I'm hoping that new technology will sound good with vintage....
 
Mirage BPS-150i . I specifically searched out and purchased a Mirage BPS-150i, reason or thought being is that it is bi-polar. It has 2 eight inch side firing drivers that are a bit smaller than typical HT specific built ones. The smaller drivers are faster acting and match the music source well. Plenty deep enough to fill in the bottom end of LP, tape or CD. A very musical sub that can do HT but better matched for music. My finding and opinions only .
